Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

It’s a ‘Paws’-itive Thing Dog Training offers a variety of group obedience classes, including Puppy Training and classes for intermediate through advanced levels. Classes are 6 weeks long and cost $150.

Puppy I Training is for puppies 16 weeks and older, as well as adult dogs with no prior group training. This class covers basic obedience skills (focus, stop, sit, down, stay, leave it, come), housebreaking tips, stopping nipping and jumping, effective crating, and leash walking techniques. It also provides a safe environment for puppy socialization.

Puppy Basic II is for puppies/adult dogs 8 months and older with prior group training or knowledge of basic commands. This class refines basic skills with added distractions, focusing on owner leadership, boundaries, loose leash walking, first response, impulse control, and proper human and dog greetings.

Advanced Beginner Obedience focuses on taking dogs to the next level after basic commands, including adding new commands, working on time, distance, and distractions, refining leash walking, and preparing for the Canine Good Citizen test.

Intermediate Dog Training (Levels 1, 2, and 3) reinforces basics and adds challenges for adolescent dogs. It refines basic skills with more distractions, incorporates impulse control, and introduces commands like “drop it” and “leave it,” refining recall and beginning off-leash work. These classes also prepare for Canine Good Citizen.

Advanced Dog Training is for dogs with prior group training and good knowledge of basic commands. This class refines focus, extends stay commands with distractions and handler out of sight, works on impulse control, figure 8’s, fronting, finishing, turns, and prepares for Advanced Canine Good Citizen or Canine Companion awards. Most activities are done on a dropped leash or off-leash, including visits to pet-friendly venues.

Their training philosophy centers on positive reinforcement methods, which they have found to be effective and long-lasting, fostering a trusting owner/pet relationship. They emphasize teaching pets how to communicate with their owners and vice versa, believing that pets inherently want to please and respond well to rewards and praise for good behavior.

The trainer aims to make training a fun and rewarding experience, going beyond basic commands to help pets become an integral part of the family. Training is also highlighted as helpful for addressing anxiety and socialization issues.
