Policies

The Polite Dog follows LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), the standard for humane behavior work. Dogs are continuously monitored for signs of distress and allowed to opt out; if a dog shows distress, the trainer re-evaluates the plan and changes the approach or equipment rather than pushing through it.

New students begin with an initial evaluation to assess the dog’s needs and set the training plan before a program starts. All training is delivered through private sessions, and any family member who wants to take part in lessons is welcome to join.

Testimonials

“Our Belgian Tervuren pulled on the leash as if she was pulling a dogsled, and she was very aggressive with other dogs and people with whom we came in close contact. Mark did an amazing job of training her (and us!) so that she now walks beautifully on the leash and isn’t bothered by other dogs or people. He does a great job of teaching both dogs and people!”
– Leia & Family

“Mark was recommended by two neighbors – and he was exactly what we needed. Mark is a true dog whisperer – he has a very calming and relaxed presence that dogs love. He had an immediate positive bond with our dog and seemed to know right away what were the best approaches to use. He really showed us the best ways to help our dog succeed — making it a very positive (and successful) experience for both us and our dog.”
– Thumper & Family

“Mark is not just a trainer; he is a true dog whisperer. His understanding of canine behavior is unmatched, and his patience and dedication to each dog’s individual needs are commendable. Mark successfully creates a positive and nurturing environment that fosters learning and growth for both the dogs and the owners. The bond established with Mark was immediate and deeply trusting.”
– Aspen & Family

“We had a great experience having Mark work with our puppy. Ziggy was always excited to see Mark at our door for his training sessions, and our family learned so much about addressing common puppy behaviors. We would not hesitate to recommend The Polite Dog.”
– Ziggy & Family

“I couldn’t be happier with the training my Black Lab, Whiskey received! Mark was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, tailoring techniques to suit his personality and energy level. Labs can be a handful, but with Mark’s guidance, he’s now well-mannered, responsive, and a joy to be around. I especially appreciated how he used positive reinforcement, which kept Whiskey excited to learn. Highly recommend The Polite Dog to anyone looking to train their pup effectively!”
– Whiskey & Family

“I had my puppy trained by Mark and I can’t thank enough for his help. As first time dog owner, I lacked knowledge and experience to raise and train my puppy properly. Mark didn’t only train my puppy but also provided me with sufficient education so that I could feel confident with continuing the training. My puppy now is a totally different dog and I am truly grateful.”
– Copper & Family

About the Trainer

The Polite Dog is a private, in-home dog training practice based in Falls Church, Virginia, serving dog owners across Northern Virginia. Owner and head trainer Mark Platenberg is a CPDT-KA certified professional dog trainer with more than 15 years of experience working with dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes.

Every client works directly with Mark. There are no group classes and no one-size-fits-all curriculum: each program starts with an evaluation of your dog, then follows a plan built around your dog’s temperament, your household, and the goals that matter to you.

Training happens where life actually happens. Sessions take place in your home, your neighborhood, and nearby parks, so the skills your dog learns transfer to real situations instead of staying behind in a classroom.

Mark’s methods are positive, reward-based, and grounded in modern behavioral science. As a CPDT-KA trainer he follows LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), monitoring dogs for signs of distress and adjusting the plan rather than pushing through it. Dogs are taught what to do, without fear, force, or intimidation.

Common goals include polite leash walking, reliable recall, calm greetings, house and crate training, puppy biting, and behavior support for dogs who are anxious, fearful, or reactive. Mark works with puppies from around eight weeks through adolescent, adult, and senior dogs, including newly adopted rescues settling into a new home.

Complimentary pick-up and drop-off is included with every program, and scheduling is flexible rather than tied to a fixed class calendar.
