Private Training – six weeks, one hour-long session a week at the training centre in downtown Bentonville, taking a dog from wherever they start through to off-leash reliability without a separate advanced program later. It covers recall, off-leash heeling, settling while food drops or the front door opens, polite greetings at the door, and focus-building training games, with five to fifteen minutes of daily homework at home. Training gear for the first dog is included, and additional dogs in the household can join the same program.

Board and Train – four weeks with the dog living inside the trainers’ home as part of the family pack rather than in a kennel. It covers the same skills as private training, with the daily repetitions handled for the owner. Visits are welcome at any time and regular owner practice sessions are required so the new habits hold at home. While the first dog is in the program, private lessons run for the other dogs back at the house. Around 100 dogs go through this program each year.

Service Dog Program – six to eighteen months, owner-led, with the dog living at home. It is built around the handler’s specific daily needs and trained to a strict public access standard. Tasks include medical alerts, mobility and balance support, and getting help in an emergency. No doctor’s note, prescription, or formal diagnosis is needed to start, and Zen Dog can help select a suitable dog or evaluate one the handler already owns.

Group Classes – the same curriculum as the private lessons in a lower-cost format.

Puppy Raising – a year-long option popular with breeders keeping a puppy from their own breeding program, returning a well-mannered adolescent. It is also available as part of the service dog package.

Pricing Summary

Zen Dog Training does not publish program prices; costs are quoted after a consultation. A 15-minute phone consult is free, and a 45-minute in-person consult is $49.

The figures they do publish: training equipment is included for the first dog, with gear for a second or third dog running about $250 each. The service dog program takes a $1,500 deposit with the balance due on graduation day. Board and train is typically booked six to eight weeks ahead, and a spot is held with a 50 percent deposit.

Policies

Every program carries a Training For Life Guarantee: two follow-up lessons a year for the life of the dog at no charge, plus free access to group sessions for life.

Private training clients who are struggling mid-program have the lessons extended at no extra cost, and if a dog needs more intensive help, what has already been paid is credited toward a boarding program.

Board and train carries a 30-day home guarantee – if a habit is not holding after the dog comes home, the dog is rebooked for a refresher stay free of charge. The program has an open-door visiting policy, and owners are required to come in regularly to practice. Zen Dog follows up after the program ends to check that progress is holding.

Training happens in real-world conditions rather than a quiet room. The business operates on a family farm with more than 45 acres of trails and play areas, and its private training centre in downtown Bentonville sits beside the Slaughter Pen Trail system, so sessions move onto the busy Razorback Greenway to work around bikes, runners, and other dogs.

Programs run from six-week private training and four-week board and train through a six-to-eighteen-month owner-led service dog program, plus group classes and a year-long puppy raising option. Lola Carter has been training dogs since 2001 and has spent close to twenty years working with service dogs.

She serves as Chairman of the Service Dog Committee for the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) and is a co-author of the 2024 LIMA Guidelines (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive), which set national standards for humane training. She was named IACP Member of the Year in 2024 for that work.
