Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Balanced Training
All services begin with an initial evaluation, which is a private, one-hour session at their training center. During this evaluation, they assess the dog’s unique “Dogality Type,” discuss common problem behaviors like jumping, barking, digging, chewing, and counter surfing, and provide a ten-day plan. For dogs showing signs of reactivity or aggression, a specialized Aggression Initial Evaluation is offered to identify underlying causes and determine a tailored, fear-free training plan.
Daycare Training programs involve dogs spending the day at the training facility with Mike, receiving training sessions for basic commands and opportunities for socialization. Drop-off is between 8am-9am, and pick-up is between 3pm-5pm. They recommend two days per week for at least five weeks. Packages include commands such as Sit, Heel, Down, Walk, Come, and Place, along with private lessons, group obedience sessions, and training videos.
The Board and Train program offers intensive training over 10 days and 9 nights, where dogs live with a professional trainer. This program focuses on establishing a strong training foundation and modifying unwanted behaviors like jumping, barking, chewing, stealing, counter surfing, and leash pulling. It includes teaching loose leash walking, sit, heel, down, come, and place, with the option for custom commands. Upon completion, owners receive a video of their dog’s training and a one-hour private session to review learned commands. This program is for dogs six months and older that do not have people or dog aggressive behaviors.
Puppy Class is a four-session group course designed for puppies under five months old who are up-to-date on vaccinations. These classes provide opportunities for play, socialization, and learning basic tricks in a healthy environment. Owners receive tips for common puppy problems like house training, nipping, chewing, and jumping, and the class includes “Dogality Type” testing.
Specialty Training options include Therapy Dog, Personal Protection Dog, and Service Dog training. These programs involve extensive training for specific roles, focusing on obedience, socialization, and proper etiquette or task performance. They offer evaluation of current pets or assistance with placing a suitable dog.

About the Trainer
Animal Training and Development (AT&D) is a dog-training academy that focuses on training both humans and dogs, offering services from basic to advanced obedience, including Canine Good Citizenship. They are also known for very advanced and specialized dog training.
AT&D’s services are sought out for problem dogs, behavioral issues, and aggression, and they are recommended by area veterinarians. They are balanced trainers, meaning they adjust their methods to best suit each dog by using appropriate rewards and gentle corrections without being harsh. Their programs never cause physical or emotional harm, and they choose tools, rewards, and techniques based on the dog’s needs, temperament, and desired training level.
The founder, Mike Rowland, developed the “Dogality Type” training method, which categorizes dogs based on their behaviors and tendencies, similar to human personality types. This approach helps them tailor training to honor each dog’s individual “dogality” to create a balanced temperament.
They offer services like puppy selection, training, and placement, as well as extensive problem behavior solving for issues such as aggression, digging, biting, and jumping. Additionally, AT&D provides occupational dog behavioral seminars for rescue groups, animal control, and veterinarians, focusing on evaluating canine personalities and preventing dog bites.
Accomplishments
Mike Rowland, the founder and owner of Animal Training and Development, is a recognized trainer and expert in dog behavior. He has been training dogs and their owners since 1988, having trained over 18,000 dogs, including dingoes.
Mike Rowland is the creator of the “Dogality Type” Training Method, which provides insight into a dog’s mind and enhances understanding between dogs and their owners. Animal Training and Development has trained protection dogs for over 20 years and has specialized in Service Dog training for 10 years. The business is recommended by area veterinarians.
How to Get Started!
To begin services with Animal Training and Development, every dog must start with an initial evaluation. This private session helps determine the dog’s individual “Dogality Type,” provides insight into their perspective, and discusses their special gifts and challenges. During the evaluation, common problem behaviors such as jumping, barking, digging, chewing, and counter surfing are addressed, and clients receive a ten-day plan. The evaluation also serves to share options for specialty training or obedience commands like Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, and Come. If a dog shows signs of reactivity or aggression, a specialized aggression evaluation is recommended.
