Canine Academy

Canine Academy offers individualized one-to-one training programs designed to achieve successful results. They provide in-resident courses for dogs, combined with working directly with the owners. Training is available for obedience, hunting, retrieving, tricks, tracking, scent discrimination, and addressing particular behavioral problems.

Pricing Summary

Boarding charges are $36.00 daily, with puppies under 6 months of age costing an additional $1.00 ($37.00 daily). Leash walks are available for an additional $6.00. Guests are charged for the day of arrival regardless of time, but there is no charge for the day of pick-up if done before or by 12 noon. Stays of 5 days or more require a deposit of approximately half the full stay amount upon arrival. Payment is accepted in the form of checks or cash; credit cards are not honored. Dog bathing is available at an additional cost upon request.

Policies

For boarding, a copy of the current vet record of shots is required, including major vaccines and Bordetella for Canine Cough. Dogs found to have fleas will be dipped at the owner’s expense. For stays of 5 days or more, a deposit of about half the full stay amount is required upon check-in. Guests are charged for the day of arrival regardless of time, but if pick-up occurs before or by 12 noon, there is no charge for that day.

Canine Academy, established in 1976, is a training and boarding school for dogs, also focusing on owner education. William H. Ruddy, the owner and trainer, has been involved in dog training since 1963 and emphasizes an individualized one-to-one training approach. The academy aims to provide the necessary time for successful results, leading to a large number of trained dogs.

The facility, expanded in 1985, is situated on six acres in the Litchfield Hills of northwestern Connecticut, offering a rural setting ideal for training and boarding. Dogs enjoy clean, spacious quarters with inside areas of 4.5′ x 6′ and outside covered areas of 4.5′ x 18′. The kennel features radiant heated floors and a 24-hour monitored fire security system. Canine Academy operates under the motto “For Those Who Are Particular.”

Accomplishments

William H. Ruddy, the owner and trainer, has been involved in the profession of training dogs since 1963, accumulating over 50 years of experience. Canine Academy itself was established in 1976 and is celebrating its 49th year. The facility underwent a significant expansion in 1985, more than doubling its original size due to popularity. Canine Academy has been recognized as a “REGISTER CITIZEN READER’S CHOICE WINNER.”
