Testimonials

My Dobermans and I have been going to Sue’s SlicK9 Classes, first for puppy stuff, and now on to Obedience Classes. We have done both Private and Group Lessons at her beautiful and well-planned canine center for almost a year now. My dogs are coming along very well and Sue is always helpful. I have had Dobermans for 45 years, have shown in Obedience and gotten CD Titles on some of them…and yet, every time we attend classes, I have learned new and better ways to work with my dogs. Sue above all, is a dog lover and a problem solver, and I heartily encourage anyone who wants to learn how to train their dog to be a pleasant, valued, and eager companion to contact Sue and see how she can help you achieve your goals with your dogs.

About the Trainer

Canine Consultants Behavior & Training Center is run by Dr. Susan Kapla, a Board-Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) with over 35 years of experience training dogs since 1989. She offers individualized behavior consultations and training using humane, science-based methods rooted in environment-behavior relations, emphasizing positive reinforcement and avoiding aversive techniques unless absolutely necessary. Dr. Kapla holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with research focused on problem behavior in companion dogs and is one of fewer than 75 CAABs nationwide. Services include private consultations, group classes beginning in spring 2025, and an online course called “Drop the Struggle!” designed to improve the human-dog relationship. Her facility in Rumely, Michigan, is purpose-built for training, and she works closely with veterinarians to rule out medical causes of behavior issues. Clients receive personalized behavior plans, written documentation, and follow-up support.

Dr. Kapla specializes in behavior modification for issues like reactivity, separation anxiety, fearfulness, and resource guarding, and works with dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes. She values understanding each dog’s unique needs based on breed, history, and environment, and helps owners become more effective, flexible behavior managers. Her approach focuses on partnership, not control, encouraging owners to see their dogs as individuals rather than projections of human expectations.

Accomplishments

Dr. Susan Kapla is a Board-Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) through the Animal Behavior Society, holding a Ph.D. in Psychology from West Virginia University (2005) with research on companion dog behavior. She has over 35 years of hands-on training experience since 1989, taught psychology at Northern Michigan University for 13 years, and has worked with shelters and veterinary clinics across Michigan, West Virginia, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
