Testimonials
“Jane is easily the best, most knowledgeable trainer in Hyde Park, and gets my enthusiastic recommendation. Forget the shouting and ‘dominance’ antics that make you look ridiculous in the park – Jane understands the canine mind, and has a great manner both with dogs and people.””
– Blixa B.
“I have to agree with the other reviews. Jane is the best when it comes to training your dog. It does not matter how bad or wild the dog is. She can train them all. She is patient and uses positive methods to train dogs as one review said. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to train their dog.”
– Yohance T.
“This is a WONDERFUL class. Jane Masterson, the teacher, has a very gentle, friendly style of teaching so the dogs love the class and can’t wait to get into the room. (She is also a very funny, smart person , who helps you to see how your dog thinks.) This teaching method has been very effective for training my puppy. I now am kicking myself a little for having taken my previous dogs to a rougher (pull-on-the-collar) training program. Both methods work, but this style is supposed to produce a more flexible, confident dog- and again, the sessions were a lot more fun and were a high point of my puppy’s week.”
– Lisa R.
About the Trainer
Canis Sapiens Dog Training aims to help dog owners build a great relationship with their dogs by fostering understanding and trust. They believe that obedience driven by fear is outdated, and instead focus on methods that encourage a dog’s willingness to listen through positive reinforcement.
The business helps owners understand their dog’s body language and motivations to resolve problem behaviors without damaging the bond. They offer both group classes and private lessons, guiding owners through protocols tailored to their personal needs and goals.
Canis Sapiens emphasizes that dogs and humans learn differently, and they teach owners how dogs learn, focusing on clear communication. They use a verbal “yes” followed by a reward (usually a treat) at the exact moment a dog performs correctly.
The school maintains small class sizes to provide individual attention, helping owners discover what rewards work best for their dog and improving timing for effective reinforcement. Their philosophy, “Festina lente” (Hurry slowly), means they advance tasks only when the dog consistently understands the current level.
They also address issues like fear or over-excitement in dogs first, as learning is difficult in such states, often using food rewards to help dogs relax. The ultimate goal is to equip owners with the tools to “talk dog” and achieve a well-trained companion who trusts and listens to them.
