Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Club Canine offers training programs based on up-to-date, scientifically proven, positive reinforcement methods, emphasizing allowing dogs to “think it out” and learn to make good decisions. They explicitly state they do not use choke, prong, or electric collars.

Currently, services are primarily virtual, including private 30 and 60-minute sessions and online courses. In-person services are temporarily suspended. Programs cover a range of needs from new puppy training and basic obedience to behavior modification for issues like aggression, reactivity, and separation anxiety. They also address socialization, prevention, and management.

Club Canine is a certified evaluator for the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, which serves as a foundational step for therapy dog work and various dog sports like AKC Community Canine, Urban CGC, tricks, obedience, agility, tracking, and scent work.

Pricing & Policies

Pricing Summary

Prices vary based on issues, number of sessions, session length, and package purchases. An initial consultation costs between $100-$185 for a 60-90 minute session. For AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification, a certificate only costs $10, while obtaining the official AKC CGC title costs $20.

Policies

For AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificates, owners must send the required paperwork to the AKC within one year of the test date; otherwise, retesting is necessary. While CGC certificates do not expire, agencies often require the dog to have passed the CGC test within the last two years for purposes such as therapy dog work, dog park admission, or insurance. All in-person services are currently suspended due to Covid-19.

About the Trainer

Club Canine is a dog training business that has been operating since 1997, focusing on dog behavior. They utilize up-to-date, scientifically proven, positive reinforcement methods, encouraging dogs to “think it out” and make good decisions. They explicitly state they never use choke, prong, or electric collars, as these are believed to suppress behavior and cause “learned helplessness.”

The business is led by Lisa Allan, ABCDT, who has over 20 years of professional experience. She holds a graduate degree in Psychology and is committed to ongoing professional development.

Currently, due to Covid-19, all in-person services are suspended, but they continue to offer online virtual private sessions and online courses. They also provide resources, articles, and a membership area for dog owners.

Accomplishments

Lisa Allan, ABCDT, has 23 years of professional experience working with dogs. She holds a graduate degree in Psychology and is a mentor and graduate of Animal Behavior College. Lisa is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) and the Pet Professional Guild (PPG).
