Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Positive Reinforcement Only
Colonial Dog School offers pet training and behavior modification using positive methods for dogs and cats. They provide group classes, in-home private lessons, and specialized programs.
Group classes accommodate a maximum of 8 to 10 dogs, last for 8 weeks, and cover approximately 15 basic obedience commands, including controlled walk, sit, stay, off, heel with an auto sit, down, down stay, sit from down, elimination on command, come with an auto sit, move to a heel, leave it, give/drop, place, wait, and quiet. An advanced course is available for dogs that have mastered basic commands and are non-aggressive.
Private lessons are conducted at the client’s home, are scheduled around the client’s availability, and cover about 15 basic commands in four sessions, each lasting sixty to ninety minutes.
New programs include a Two Week Boot Camp, which features an initial consultation and two weeks (usually Monday-Friday) of 1-hour training sessions at the client’s home. House Training Help is a 90-minute session focused on proper housetraining for new puppies or dogs with ongoing issues. Leash Walking 101 trains dogs to walk properly on the leash, including loose leash walking and heeling with an automatic sit. A New Puppy Consultation helps prepare homes for a new puppy or assists once the puppy arrives, addressing house training, nipping, and basic manners. Clients can also “Create Your Own Program” for specific issues like bad manners at the door or pulling on the leash, typically involving one or two sessions.
Behavior modification programs for dogs and cats begin with a 90-minute in-home meeting to discuss and observe the problem, followed by a tailored behavior modification plan. Follow-up sessions can be scheduled to monitor progress or adjust the program. These programs address aggressions, fears, phobias, inappropriate elimination problems, and obsessive compulsive disorders.
