Cooperhaus K9 offers a variety of training programs based on their balanced Cooperhaus K9 Training System (CHK9), which combines positive reinforcement with correction and guidance. This system aims to develop full off-leash control through five basic commands: Heel, Sit, Down, Stay, and Come.

Their **Group Lessons** are structured into four levels. All new clients and dogs must begin with Level 1, which, along with Level 2, runs as a five-week series. Levels 3 and 4 are ongoing drop-in classes. These classes emphasize socialization and distraction, progressing from foundational skills like calm leash walking and basic commands to advanced off-leash obedience, including working under extreme distraction and responding to one-word commands.

**Private Lessons** are available for dogs with specific behavioral issues such as aggression or anxiety, or for owners who prefer one-on-one attention. These sessions are customized to address individual needs and can also serve as preparation for group classes. The **Board and Train** program is a five-week intensive program where dogs stay at the facility, receiving daily training and enriching socialization. This program focuses on on- and off-leash obedience, agility, off-site proofing, and behavior modification for issues like fear and aggression. It includes a private review session with the owner and a follow-up private lesson.

Specialty classes include **AKC Rally Training** for competitive obedience and **E-Collar Training** for advanced off-leash control. They also offer **Puppy Training** for dogs up to 5 months old, covering play, biting, socializing, confidence building, and overcoming separation anxiety. Additionally, **Socialization and Reactivity Training** is available for dogs that have completed Level 1 or higher, simulating dog park scenarios to help dogs deal with reactivity.

The business also actively supports rescue dogs through a partnership with Mary’s Doggies (Adopt a Doggie) since 2015, providing reduced group class fees for these dogs.

Founded in 1971 by Calvin Cooper, Cooperhaus K9 boasts over 60 years of family experience in breeding and training, establishing a significant legacy in the Bay Area. Accomplishments

Calvin Cooper, the founder of Cooperhaus K9, established the facility in 1971. He was a member and trainer of “Diethsthunde,” one of the first Schutzhund clubs in the United States, and competed in one of the first Schutzhund trials in the US in 1962.

Brent Cooper, the lead trainer and owner, has over 40 years of experience in dog training, having officially trained his first dog at age 8. He taught group classes for the City of San Jose as a teenager and has worked with private clients since age 16. Brent developed his own unique training system and has titled dogs in the sport of Schutzhund/IGP. He is also a certified American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluator. Brent is recognized as an expert in dealing with difficult dogs, often serving as a last resort for rescue groups, animal shelters, and families.

Titus Cooper, Brent’s son, started training dogs at age 10. He is a certified IGP Helper and an IGP certified decoy, demonstrating a tremendous skillset as a protection helper.

How to Get Started!

To begin training, new clients and dogs are required to attend a Level 1 group class, starting with Session 1. If a dog has already achieved Level 1 proficiency through private lessons, they may enroll in Level 2 or higher. Clients can register for group classes by completing an online form. For private lessons, clients should select “Private Lesson Request” on the registration form.

A free evaluation is available to meet with Brent and Matthew to determine the best training approach; registration is required for these slots. Payment for each session is required prior to class, with Venmo payment information emailed after registration. Clients can also pay with cash or credit card upon arrival and should bring their printed email confirmation or Venmo receipt to class.
