Dog Training Methodology
Cour’s Retrievers offers a range of training programs, starting with foundational skills and progressing to advanced hunting and competition training. The “Foundation” programs include Puppy Imprinting, a 2-week program for puppies 12-16 weeks old, focusing on positive introduction to commands, respectful behavior, and informal basic obedience. Basic Obedience is a 6-8 week program for all ages and breeds, teaching 5 basic commands (Sit, Down, Here, Heel, Place), leash manners, and addressing disrespectful behaviors.
Their “Retriever Training” programs are designed for hunting and competition. The Gundog program, a 4-5 month program, develops basic hunting retriever commands, expanding obedience into field work, teaching steadiness to shot, retrieving to hand, and simulated hunting scenarios. Graduates are eligible for AKC Junior/UKC Started Hunt Tests. The Advanced GunDog program, a 6-month program, builds on this by teaching blind retrieves using whistle and hand signals, and handling multiple retrieves in high-action scenarios, making dogs eligible for AKC Senior/UKC Seasoned Hunt Tests. The Performance Retriever program aims to train retrievers for the highest levels of competition in any retriever venue, including AKC Field Trials, Super Retriever Series, and AKC Master Hunter/Master National Hunt Tests.
Additionally, they offer Board & Train programs for training refreshers and outdoor activities while owners are away, with nightly, weekly, and monthly rates. These include Basic Obedience Tune Up and Gundog Tune Up for dogs that have completed their respective programs. Visits are by appointment only.
