Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

David’s Dog Training offers several private training programs. Puppy Kindergarten is for puppies 5-1/2 months and younger, covering housetraining, socialization, stopping unwanted behaviors like nipping, chewing, and jumping, beginning basic obedience, and puppy-proofing. This program includes six 1-hour lessons.

Obedience Training is for dogs older than 5-1/2 months, offering basic (on-leash) and advanced (off-leash) lessons. Dogs learn loose leash walking (heel/let’s walk), “no” or “eh eh” and “ok,” sit, automatic sit, stay, down, and come. Problematic behaviors like jumping, chewing, and barking can also be addressed. This program also consists of six 1-hour lessons.

Housetraining is available for puppies or adult dogs, focusing on crate training and providing a schedule to eliminate messes. Tune-Ups are offered for dogs who have previously undergone obedience training and need a refresher, with specific advice for current problems. Personal Dog Training is designed for busy owners, where David trains the dog, followed by lessons for the owner to understand how to work with their trained dog. Behavior Modification addresses specific problems such as territorial or possessive behavior, potty training issues, shyness or anxiety (separation anxiety, noise/sound phobias), inappropriate behaviors (counter surfing, excessive barking, jumping), and destructive behaviors (digging, chewing). The trainer also assists with choosing the right breed, temperament testing, introducing new dogs to family members (including babies and children), and puppy/dog proofing homes.

Testimonials

“Your suggestions were really helpful and I am practicing them with her for short periods every day. I especially appreciated that you gave me several options for ways to change her behavior and I was able to choose methods that seemed most suited for me and for my dog. As you said, each dog is different and we have to adopt methods to the individual dog. This approach seems so much more sensible to me than the dogmatic “do it my way only” approach of some trainers. Thanks also for your patience. You saw the training session through to a good result. Your recommendations for dog products and dog care are much appreciated. The demonstrations you gave about how to control Amber from jumping up on people were more informative than anything I have read or any training videos I have viewed. Thanks again.”

“This is the best company I have ever worked with. I have a year-old miniature poodle. David was wonderful with him. Benji loved seeing him and David got him to sit, stay and drop anything Benji picked up (like my shoe). Benji is much better since I had David to help train him. David also gave me tips to stop his barking and his nipping my ankles. I can’t thank him enough.s friendly and the results are always of the highest quality.”
– Maxine V. – Lido Beach, NY

“David is a great trainer. He helped me and my puppy get the help we needed. I would definitely recommend him. A++ all the way.”
– Simon B. – Flushing, NY
