Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Positive Reinforcement Only
Dog4Ewe offers comprehensive training through herding clinics, board and train programs, and individual lessons. Herding clinics are available for one or multiple days, with participants working their dog twice daily. John provides expert analysis and clear recommendations, focusing on developing calm working dogs and moving stock quietly. Handlers of all experience levels are welcome, and auditing is also available.
The board and train program is offered at their facility for a limited number of dogs. This program teaches dogs to use their natural abilities in cooperation with the handler, with training tailored for farm and ranch work or trial work in various associations like USBCHA, ASCA, AHBA, or AKC. Handling services are also available.
Individual lessons are provided year-round by appointment, allowing customers to learn how to better teach their dogs. Training progresses from a small round pen to open field work in a 5-acre pasture, emphasizing a quiet, calm, and slow-paced approach to develop a strong working relationship and willing response from the dog.

About the Trainer
John Holman and Dog4Ewe offer specialized dog training services, focusing on herding, agility, and obedience. John, who retired after 30 years with the USDA, began his passion for stockdogs in 1980 and has since gained extensive experience with a wide variety of herding breeds, not just his renowned DOG4EWE Border Collies.
The business provides herding clinics across North America and Europe, board and train programs at their facility, and individual lessons available year-round. They also offer judging services and demonstrations showcasing the talents of their Border Collies. John’s training philosophy is positive and calm, aiming to develop a working dog that is happy to cooperate with its handler. His methods focus on understanding the dog’s motivation and adjusting the approach based on the dog’s feedback, ensuring quiet, calm, and slow-paced lessons.
