Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Family Dog Obedience & Training helps owners and dogs build communication and obedience foundation. They are not a “one size fits all” program; they evaluate each dog and develop a custom training plan based on owner goals. They focus on educating owners about their dog’s breed, proactive behavior prevention, effective communication, understanding dog communication, advocating for their dog, meeting their dog in the middle, and building a strong, positive relationship.

They offer AKC STAR Puppy Program, which focuses on Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility, covering proper socialization, potty training, kennel training, mental/physical/breed enrichments, cooperative care/grooming, safety/health and wellness, and basic obedience (sit, down, recall, stay, polite leash manners). This program is offered in private in-home classes and board and train.

They also offer the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program, a 10-skill test for good manners and responsible ownership, including accepting friendly strangers, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming, loose leash walking, walking through a crowd, sit and down on cue and stay in place, coming when called, reaction to another dog, supervised separation, and reaction to distraction. This program is required before advancing to the next levels.

The AKC Community Canine Good Citizen Program teaches skills like waiting under control while the owner sits at a registration desk, loose leash walking in natural situations without pulling, walking through crowds, walking past distractions, sit-stay in small groups, allowing approach by people carrying items, “leave it” around food, down or sit-stay at a distance, and recall with distractions.

The AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen Program focuses on skills for city living, such as exiting/entering doorways without pulling in dog-friendly buildings, walking through crowds on busy sidewalks, appropriate reaction to city distractions (movement, noises, various surfaces), crossing streets under control, ignoring food on sidewalks, allowing petting by people carrying items, walking under control in public buildings, down stay in public, stairs/steps/elevator under control, house training for city living, and transportation.

All AKC programs are taught and evaluated by their AKC evaluator, Abby Taylor. Upon passing, participants receive a Certificate, Title/Award, and are placed on the AKC Canine Good Citizen List.

Testimonials

“Abby has done such wonderful things for my dachshund and myself. Our dog Maddux was a horrible puppy. He creid all day and night, chewed absolutely everything, and was impossible to potty train. I was on the verge of rehoming him. I met Abby at work and asked for her help. Within one day I saw a drastic change. It was AMAZING. After completing training, Abby became our full time dog walker. She was reliable/flexable, communicated well, and most importantly affordable. Maddux loved Abby so much. 10/10 recommend!”

“We recently hired Abby at Family Dog to train our rescue dog, Huck, and we had the best experience. We rescued Huck and he had zero prior training. He is 85 lbs so it was important for us that he receive training. We had never done a board and train program before with our other dogs and now we feel like we couldn’t live without one. We signed up for the 2.5 week board and train and we are so satisfied with our results. Abby was able to take our unruly dog and turn him into a very well-mannered one. The entire time he was at training, Abby kept us updated on his progress with constant texts and videos so we could see how he was doing each day. We were very impressed by how knowledgable Abby is and by how much she loves what she does. We felt so comfortable leaving Huck with her and it was very evident he was getting so much love and attention during his 2.5 weeks. Abby even went above and beyond and made us personalized videos explaining how to continue to work on the skills Huck learned. We went from being unable to walk Huck, to now finally enjoying our walks with him. We were blown away by the changes she was able to make. She also helped educate us on his breed which helped us understand him better. We also loved that our board and train came with multiple follow up lessons which has helped us continue to advance his skills, and also make sure we are doing everything right to help keep Huck successful. We highly recommend Abby and couldn’t be more pleased with our experience!”

“I could not have asked for a better experience for my dog Poppy. In addition to laying the foundation during the initial board and train, Abby has also followed up to ensure I have the proper tools and am trained to implement them. This has allowed for continued progression in Poppy’s (and my) skills. I appreciate the additional training sessions and check ins. It is clear Abby is passionate about helping others and is a wealth of great information. Poppy loves her session days!”
