About the Trainer
Gentle Canines is a balanced dog training program with a positive reinforcement-based curriculum, tailored to each animal’s specific behavioral needs. The primary goal is the safety, happiness, and health of the pet, the family, visitors, and neighborhood animals.
The owner and creator, Dee Main, has over 35 years of experience training a variety of dogs for diverse needs, including show dogs, search and rescue dogs, police dogs, service animals, and family pets. She became a full-time trainer in 2017, driven by a desire to help owners with fear-reactive dogs and prevent animals from being abandoned or euthanized due to correctable behaviors.
Gentle Canines offers personalized, in-home training programs to address behavioral issues, aiming to keep canines with their human families. The program focuses on teaching owners how to effectively communicate with their pets, fostering a strong trust bond and enabling the owner and pet to act as a team. This approach has proven effective for fear-reactive, stranger-reactive, leash-reactive, and resource-guarding animals.
The trainer makes suggestions for the animal’s happiness and safety, but owners are respected in their right to make informed decisions about their pets. Gentle Canines works with all ages, breeds, and sizes of dogs, requiring all participating animals to be up-to-date on vaccinations. They do not offer board and train programs or classroom settings, believing that in-home training is crucial for owners to learn how to recognize and address issues in their dog’s environment.
