Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Equipment:

  • Clickers
  • Food Rewards
  • Harnesses
  • Flat Collars

Training begins with shelter dog selection and Volhard temperament testing. Candidates are placed with volunteer fosters for 6–12 months to learn house manners, public access, and basic obedience. Applicants then join weekly classes to bond with their dog and learn handling skills. The dog is then transferred to one of three professional trainers (Marj, Onyx, or Beth) for task-specific training. Once tasks are mastered, the dog is placed with the handler, and the team continues attending weekly classes for proofing and skill refinement. Ongoing phone and in-person support is provided indefinitely. The entire process can take 1–2 years depending on the complexity of tasks.

Testimonials

Marj’s proven, intuitive understanding of dogs has helped our service dog come a long way. Some would say she is a very strong willed dog, and others may have given up on her– but Marj saw that she was capable of incredible focus, and given the right instruction she has thrived in her career as a service dog.

Our daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes almost 3 years ago. We have been looking for a service dog to help us manage her care, but the cost seemed astronomical. We were introduced to Glad Wags in November 2024 and matched with an amazing dog in December. We first met him in March and in May 2025 he came home with us. Marj and the Glad Wags family do not sugar coat things. They are up front about training, schedules, difficulties you may encounter, and so on. They really do put their heart and soul into these animals. Marj can remember every dog she has ever trained. She remembers each client and their “special ability”, not disability. Marj continues to work with you and your dog. The process is never over. It’s not a “deliver a service and good luck”, her and her team are there for you even after the service animal hand off.

I had an unruly puppy I brought in for board and train. After he finished his stay, I was going to classes with him to continue his training. A few months into training, he began alerting (I didn’t initially need him as a service dog, he began alerting on his own). Marge immediately recognized his alerts and asked if I was ok and I said I didn’t feel “right” but didn’t know what was happening. I went to the doctor, and found out I was sick. The training my pup had received taught him to recognize my illness and take care of me even before I knew I was sick. My puppy was then retrained as an actual medical alert service dog, and he continues to recognize and alert me before I need my EpiPen to stop anaphylactic reactions. He has saved me several times by his alerts that something bad is coming. Without his amazing training, I’m sure I would have been hospitalized more than a few times now. He also recognizes migraines before they begin, and makes sure I take medicine to minimize the effects or completely stop the migraine. Glad Wags has taught him to alert me in different ways so I know what he is telling me and which medications I need long before I have to use the heavy duty meds (EpiPen), so I can avoid having to go to the hospital each time. Even my doctor is amazed at how well he predicts my medical crisis long before it actually becomes a crisis. This never would have happened without Glad Wags and Marj’s expertise at training him. I so much appreciate how well she first taught us to work together at first just to have good manners and stop destroying my house as a puppy, but now as my faithful companion who, no doubt, has saved my life. I cannot say enough good things about Marj and her training.

About the Trainer

GLAD WAGS SERVICE DOGS is a dog training business founded in 1974, celebrating 50 years of professionally training dogs as of 2024. Led by Marj, the organization specializes in training service dogs for individuals with medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, PTSD, multiple sclerosis, and more. They also offer obedience training and directed self-training programs for dog owners. Their unique approach involves selecting dogs from shelters, assessing them with Volhard temperament tests, and placing them with experienced volunteer fosters for foundational training before advanced task training with certified trainers Marj, Onyx, or Beth. Clients are actively involved throughout the process, attending weekly classes to build teamwork with their dog. Training continues indefinitely with ongoing support, phone assistance, and classes to ensure long-term success. They emphasize honesty, transparency, and ethical pricing, avoiding predatory costs. Marj is known for her intuitive understanding of dogs and her commitment to each client and dog, often remembering every dog and handler she has trained. They do not use shock collars and focus on positive, relationship-based training.

They provide service dog training, obedience classes, and directed self-training. Their program is tailored to each individual’s needs, with no one-size-fits-all approach. They also offer continuous support after placement, making training a lifelong process for the handler-dog team.

While they primarily focus on service dog training, they also help owners with puppy behavior issues, reactivity, and general obedience, often transforming unruly puppies into life-saving service partners.

They do not offer grooming, boarding, walking, or pet retail services.

Their training is conducted at their facility and through in-person classes with clients, not via video calls or in-home visits.

They are a nonprofit grassroots organization that accepts donations and relies on volunteer fosters.

They do not breed dogs but source them from shelters.

They do not offer therapy or competition dog training as primary services.

They do not offer day training or board and train as standalone services — training is integrated into a long-term team-building process.

They do not offer pet sitting, daycare, or pet store services.
