Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Equipment:

  • Food Rewards

Go Pawsitive offers a structured progression of K9 Nose Work training. “Intro to K9 Nose Work®” establishes the foundation of independent hunting using food and/or toys. This is followed by “Intro to Odor®,” where target odors (Birch, Anise, Clove) are introduced, along with discussions on odor kit hygiene, reward strategies, and odor movement.

“Continuing Nose Work” builds upon established odor understanding by adding new elements, solidifying the dog’s drive to source, and introducing skills like elevation and converging odor. “Travel Classes” are drop-in sessions designed for competition readiness, allowing teams to practice in diverse environments. “Elite & Summit Classes” are for preparing dogs for the highest levels of competition, focusing on advanced problems, stamina, and strategy. Private coaching is available for specific skill development or problem-solving outside of group class times.

Pricing & Policies

Pricing Summary

Intro classes are $150 for 6 weeks. Travel Classes are $150 for a 6-class punch card. Private appointments are $100 for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

About the Trainer

Go Pawsitive, LLC specializes in K9 Nose Work classes and coaching, teaching exclusively using the K9 Nose Work® Method developed by the founders of NACSW®. They offer a comprehensive progression of classes, from foundational introductory levels to advanced competition preparation, including group classes, drop-in travel classes, and personalized private coaching.

The training philosophy at Go Pawsitive emphasizes the handler’s role as a curious student of their dog’s behavior, a deep understanding of canine olfaction and odor movement, and the development of repeatable handling skills. Jessica Miller, the trainer, has been teaching K9 Nose Work since 2013. She has successfully competed two Australian Shepherds to NW3 level and is currently preparing her youngest dog for NW1. She has also guided numerous clients and their dogs through various competition venues such as NACSW, AKC, CWAGS, and PSD.

Beyond classes, Go Pawsitive hosts seminars and workshops featuring experts from across the US, providing new ideas and insights into K9 Nose Work training. Additionally, Jessica Miller offers judging and officiating services for NACSW and AKC Scent Work trials.

Accomplishments

Jessica Miller holds certifications as a CPDT-KA, CNWI, and PMCT. She has been teaching K9 Nose Work classes since 2013. Jessica has competed two Australian Shepherds (Cassie & Penny) through the NW3 level and is currently preparing her youngest dog for NW1. She has successfully guided many clients and their dogs through NACSW, AKC, CWAGS, and PSD competitions.

Jessica is an approved NACSW Certifying Official for NW1, NW2, and L1 & 2 EST trials. She is also an AKC Scent Work judge, licensed to judge all levels from Novice to Detective. Additionally, Jessica is approved to act as a CO or Judge at all NACSW Odor Recognition Tests (ORTs).

How to Get Started!

For group classes, new clients are required to complete a New Client Questionnaire. “Intro to Nose Work” is a prerequisite for “Intro to Odor,” and “Intro to Odor” or a demonstrated understanding of all three odors is a prerequisite for “Continuing Nose Work.” Dogs must be able to wait quietly in a crate or car to join Intro classes. For Travel Class, dogs must be confidently working Birch, Anise, and Clove.
