Obedience training focuses on eliminating confusion and establishing a dog’s place, teaching basic commands such as sit, stay, heel, kennel, and quiet. This stage emphasizes reward and praise to build motivation, confidence, trust, and mutual respect, forming a solid foundation for further training.

The Basic Retriever program builds upon obedience, conditioning dogs to the electric collar and force fetching them to deliver birds without chewing, dropping, or mouthing. Dogs learn to sit steady to shot and mark single or double retrieves on land or in water, delivering to hand. They are introduced to birds, decoys, boats, and hunting blinds. This process takes approximately four months to complete, after which the dog is considered “started.”

The Advanced Gundog program, which requires successful completion of the Basic Retriever course, teaches dogs to mark and retrieve multiple birds. Dogs learn whistle commands and hand signals, enabling handlers to direct them to unseen downed birds. This program also takes approximately four months to complete, aiming to produce a “good gundog.”

At Goldsby Retrievers & Obedience, they offer several training options for dogs. Their goal is to help owners achieve either a family companion or a finished gun dog. They accept dogs for formal training as early as five months and as late as two years, though most dogs enter their program between 7-10 months of age.
