Training includes six-week group classes (one day/week) for puppies, basic obedience, advanced skills, CGC, Rally, and competition obedience. Private in-facility or in-home training is available. Custom 2–3 week intensive board-and-train programs focus on specific needs, followed by a home follow-up session. Programs cover sit, down, stay, heel, recall, leash walking, and advanced obedience tasks. AAT and competition training require prerequisites and instructor approval. All programs emphasize positive reinforcement and handler education.

Pricing Summary

Boarding: $30/night for one dog, $28/night for multiple dogs; 10-night stay gets one night free; $33/night on holidays; $3 extra for giant breeds or medication administration. Daycare: $23/full day, $15/half day. Training: Group classes are 6-week sessions; custom intensive programs last 2–3 weeks with boarding included. Bathing: $20–$45 based on weight. Payment by cash or check only.

Policies

All dogs must be current on vaccinations; proof required. Drop-off must be by 4:00 pm Monday–Friday; pick-up by 2:00 pm, with a $15 half-day charge for late pickups. Payment is cash or check only. Training classes require vaccination proof for both dog and handler. A flat leather or nylon collar and 4–6 foot leash are required for training sessions. Treats are recommended but not required.

Good Dog Training & Kennels is a family-owned dog training and boarding facility located in Trussville, AL, just outside Birmingham. Owned and operated by Les Tippen, a trainer with nearly 35 years of experience, the business offers expert obedience training and premier boarding services in a natural 13-acre setting. Les trains dogs using positive, consistent methods and has successfully trained hundreds of dogs across all breeds, including three of his own Golden Retrievers in AKC Obedience Trials. The facility provides group classes, private in-facility training, and intensive board-and-train programs. Boarding includes daily exercise, nature walks, climate-controlled runs, and specialized care for dogs with dietary needs. While full grooming is not offered, baths are available. The team, including Les’s son Scott who manages boarding, treats every dog like family, ensuring clean, safe, and attentive care.

Training programs include Puppy, Basic, Advanced Basic, Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Rally, Competition Obedience, and Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) preparation. Classes are limited to five dogs for personalized attention. Customized 2–3 week training programs are available with boarding, followed by a session to teach owners how to continue training at home. All dogs must be current on vaccinations, and trained handlers are required to provide proof of their own vaccinations. An animal behaviorist, Paula Grunwell, is on-call for serious aggression cases.

Accomplishments

Les Tippen has trained hundreds of dogs over 35 years and has titled three Golden Retrievers in AKC Obedience Trials. He is recognized by animal behaviorist Paula Grunwell as a preferred referral for obedience training. The facility has operated since 2005 with consistent community praise for results and care.
