Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Balanced Training

Equipment:

  • Flat Collars
  • Head Halters

Green Timber Training & Kennels offers Basic and Advanced Obedience programs, primarily through a Facility Board & Train model, with personal one-on-one training sessions also available. All K9s must undergo an evaluation before entering the basic obedience program.

Phase 1, Basic Obedience Training (4 weeks), focuses on building a foundation of firm obedience with five on-leash commands: sit (which means stay), down, here, heel, and place. These commands are tested with various distractions. Phase 2, Advanced Obedience Training, moves to off-leash control of these basic commands, initially in a controlled environment, then with distractions. The “Place” command teaches the dog to go to and stay in a specific location.

The training incorporates positive praise as a reward, reinforcing correct behaviors. Verbal corrections (“No”) are used when a dog understands a command but refuses to obey. The approach emphasizes establishing the owner as the “Pack Leader” to reduce refusal. They also address a variety of behavioral issues including aggression (fear, general, predatory, toy, dominance), barking/whining, biting/nipping, chewing, jumping, pulling on leash, reactivity, separation anxiety, and puppy training/socialization.

About the Trainer

Green Timber Training & Kennels is a dog training and boarding business led by J.R. Totten, a certified ABC (Animal Behavioral College) professional with over 30 years of experience. They aim to make a difference in the lives of K9s and their owners, specializing in dog obedience and behavioral issues, particularly with larger-breed dogs. While passionate about gun dog training, they also focus on creating confident family and hunting companions.

The cornerstone of their program emphasizes owner involvement and handler education, working one-on-one to build communication skills between owners and their dogs. They strive to prevent pets from ending up in shelters by providing proper knowledge and training.

Their facility includes a 2400 sq ft climate-controlled building with 1200 sq ft dedicated to boarding, featuring 20 kennels (11 semi-isolation, 10 open concept for socialization). There’s also a 1200 sq ft indoor training area and a 1600 sq ft outdoor fenced area for potty breaks, fun, and socializing. The property is fully fenced and gated 24/7, accessed by appointment only, with security keypads and a recorded camera system. A backup generator ensures climate control during power outages.
