Classes are 50 minutes and run for five weeks. They cover introductory puppy training through advanced obedience and competition sports like Agility, Obedience, Rally, and Scent Work. Specific classes include Rally Run Throughs, Fit Dog Level 2, Scent Work 1 & 3, STAR Puppy, Basic Obedience, Canine Conditioning, and AKC Competition Beginner Novice/Novice Obedience. The club also offers AKC Canine Good Citizen preparation and testing.
Pricing & Policies
Pricing Summary
All classes are 50 minutes and run for five weeks except where noted. Class price is $100. Active Members: $35. Non-active members/Seniors 65 or older/active Military, PMCL members: $90.00. Owner of rescue dog: $90.00 (one-time discount). Individual Annual Membership – Renewal: $35.00. Family Annual Membership – Renewal: $45.00. Membership renewals are due from December through the end of January each year. After January, there is a $10 fee for late renewals until December.
Policies
To renew membership, you must have attended two (2) club meetings and worked ten (10) volunteer hours for the club. All memberships must be voted on by club members and are not final until the vote has taken place.

Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club (HROTC) is an AKC obedience club established in 1947, serving as a canine training resource in Hampton Roads. They offer classes for dogs of all ages and owners of all experience levels, ranging from introductory puppy training to advanced training and obedience. This includes preparation and testing for AKC Canine Good Citizen, as well as classes for AKC competition in Agility, Obedience, Rally, and Scent Work.
All HROTC instructors adhere to reward-based, positive training techniques, explicitly stating they do not allow or recommend aversive methods like E-Collars, prong collars, choke collars, physical punishment, or yelling. Their philosophy emphasizes building a relationship of trust and respect between dog and handler.
Membership offers reduced-cost training classes and opportunities to participate in events. To become an active member, individuals must attend two club meetings and complete ten volunteer hours annually. The club also hosts trials and events, and provides a photo gallery of past activities.
Accomplishments
Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club (HROTC) was established in 1947 and is an AKC obedience club. Their instructors are experienced dog owners who have earned titles with their own dogs in various sports and routinely attend seminars to expand their skills.
Notable instructors include Carol DeLuca, an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator and AKC Fit Dog Instructor with a background in education and psychology. Karen Neymark is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA ret). Silke Satzinger is an AKC STAR Puppy/CGC/CGCA/CGCU-Evaluator, UKC-Rally Obedience Judge, SOPT-Evaluator, and Scent Work Judge, having titled many dogs across various disciplines. Dustin Weekley is an ACCS-KA Certified Professional Dog Trainer, AKC-approved CGC, ATT, and Trick Dog Evaluator, and a Level 3 AKC Fit Dog Instructor, with over 27 years of experience.

To register for classes, visit the ‘Current Class Session & Registration’ page. To become an active member and qualify for reduced class costs, you must attend two club meetings and work ten volunteer hours for the club each year. Once these requirements are met, you can add the membership item to your cart and fill out the member form during checkout. All memberships are subject to a club vote.
