Dog Training Methodology
Heartland Dog Training offers a structured progression of classes. The Puppy Class, for puppies 3-6 months (small breeds) or 3-5 months (large breeds), is a 6-week, 1-hour class designed for socialization and informal training, covering basic commands like leash walking, come, sit, lay down, stand, and stay. It is a family-friendly class.
The Beginners Obedience Class is for dogs 6 months or older, lasting 8 weeks with 1-hour sessions. This class focuses on more formal training, aiming for dogs to walk without pulling, sit when stopping, stand quietly for handling, and reliably respond to “Sit Stay,” “Down Stay,” and “Come” commands.
The Intermediate Obedience Class, a 6-week, 1-hour class, requires completion of Beginners Obedience. It covers advanced work, including preparation for Canine Good Citizen, loose leash walking, hand signals, and an increase in commands. The Rally Class, also 6 weeks, requires completion of both Beginners and Intermediate classes. Rally is a dog sport designed for fun, focusing on training dogs to behave well in various environments, including home, public places, and around other dogs.
