Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Equipment:

  • E-Collars

Training is integrated into the fence installation process using the GentleSteps™ method, which begins with extremely low stimulation levels to encourage intellectual learning. Owners receive hands-on instruction during the initial session and are taught how to adjust collar settings. Follow-up calls and optional in-person visits ensure progress. Training is customized per dog’s temperament and learning pace, with no fixed schedule—progress is based on the dog’s response.

Testimonials

After having 2 fairly laid back dogs over the past 21 years, I rescued a rather “stoic” English Spring Spaniel that had me rather concerned about flight and her safety. I reached out to Lester at Hidden Fence and his knowledge of a dog’s behaviour and thought process is something I have never seen before.
Upon arrival, “Lucy” wasn’t too fond of Lester…but, she isn’t fond of a lot of people. After the fence install, he spent a few hours working with her (and me) on getting her used to her (unknown to her) new freedom she was about to embark on. The training is VERY interesting and the opposite of what you may be thinking when considering a fence.
By the time he left, we were off to a great start and a plan for reinforcement. Lester called nearly every day, after the first week, to check on her and make recommendations. As we are local, we got a surprise visit on Friday…Lucy charged out the door to see him!! She LOVES Lester now!
All I can say is, if you have stress or concerns about your dog(s) on your property, just speak to Lester. I’d recommend simply doing the install and watching the stress melt away. YOU AND your dog will be very happy and enjoy your time outside TOGETHER! Just make the call.
Enjoy!

I had Lester from Hidden Fence install their pet fence system for our 5-month-old golden retriever puppy Riley. From the minute you meet Lester you feel confident he loves dogs and wants the entire experience to be positive. His explanation of how the system is installed is unparalleled. He walks the yard with you to ensure the barrier is where you want it located giving you suggestions from his years of experience along the way and where the control box location will be located. He patiently explains step by step how to operate the system and why his system is safer than the competitors. Watching the efficiency of the installation and lack of any damage to the yard was impressive. But where Lester really shines is watching him interact with our puppy and how she responded to him. Within a very short time, she responded to the system and was always wagging her tail and never scared. He makes the entire training experience a positive one for the dog. I highly recommend Lester form Hidden Fence and feel so much better knowing Riley is protected with the Hidden Fence system. Lester’s pricing is more than fair and worth every penny.

Lester Pullen’s Hidden Fence offers amazing support before during and after your installation. Lester started the training on the day of installation and took his time so I fully understood how the process should work. In no time both our pets were able to run the entire yard and knew their boundaries. We can finally relax and let our pups run the yard. It is also really nice to know that Hidden Fence is just a phone call away if we need them.

About the Trainer

Hidden Fence is a veteran-owned dog training and pet containment company established in 1996, serving Maryland and Northern Virginia. They specialize in installing electronic pet fencing systems and provide a proprietary, reward-based training method called GentleSteps™, designed to teach dogs boundaries using low-stimulation, intellectual learning rather than fear or pain. Their founder, Lester Pullen, introduced the GentleSteps™ method in 2001 and has trained over 150 Pet Stop dealers in this humane approach. Training is conducted on-site during installation and includes personalized follow-up, with owners taught how to adjust collar settings themselves. The company also offers independent service and compatible batteries for other brands like Invisible Fence® and PetSafe®. Their focus is on creating a positive, low-stress experience for both dogs and owners, with ongoing customer support and no high-pressure sales tactics.

They are not a traditional dog training facility offering group classes or obedience schools, but rather a specialized contractor who integrates training directly into the installation of electronic fencing systems. Their service is tailored to dog owners seeking secure, boundary-based containment without physical fences, with an emphasis on behavioral understanding and long-term safety.

Accomplishments

Lester Pullen introduced the GentleSteps™ training method in 2001 at the IACP annual meeting, which has since been adopted by over 150 Pet Stop dealers. Hidden Fence is an authorized Pet Stop® dealer and has maintained a local reputation for over 25 years as a trusted provider in Maryland and Northern Virginia.

How to Get Started!

Client engagement begins with a free consultation and quote. Lester Pullen visits the property to assess yard layout, discuss boundary preferences, and explain the GentleSteps™ training process. Installation and initial training are scheduled together, with follow-up support provided via phone and optional in-person visits.
