Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Equipment:

  • Clickers
  • Food Rewards
  • Harnesses
  • Flat Collars
  • Obstacle Courses

Training begins with a free consultation and starts in a controlled facility using positive reinforcement. Basic obedience covers sit, stay, down, come, and heel off-leash. Progression includes adding distractions, then moving to public environments. Service and therapy programs require completion of the Pet Dog Obedience program first. Training is ongoing and tailored to the dog’s needs, with owners expected to continue practice at home. Training is suspended once the dog meets contract standards, and owners are encouraged to test skills in daily life. Lifelong support is available at no extra cost if the dog regresses.

Pricing & Policies

Pricing Summary

Basic Pet Dog Obedience costs $1,500 for a 10-week minimum program. Service and Therapy Dog Training ranges from $1,500–$10,000 depending on whether the client provides the dog or uses one from Holland K9. Working Dog Training costs $5,000–$25,000. All programs include a lifetime guarantee with free tune-ups. No cancellation fees are stated in the contract, but refund policies are conditional on adherence to training terms.

Policies

All training is guaranteed for the life of the dog with free tune-ups if regression occurs. If a dog does not meet the contract’s obedience standards, Holland K9 will either issue a refund or provide additional training. Refunds are only provided if the contract cannot be fulfilled and the client has adhered to all training policies. Cancellation policies are not explicitly stated in the contract, but one review indicates refunds were denied despite no non-refundable clause being present.

Testimonials

John Holland is BY FAR the best trainer you could ever find! Hands down! He is goal driven, detail oriented, and will customize his training services to fit your specific needs. John is always available for any and all questions and specific needs that you may have throughout the entire training process. I and my service dog, Lana, are incredibly satisfied with the outcome of John’s training services. Him and his staff are very knowledgeable and attentive to every k9 and owner that is in his facility at all times. He will quickly warm your heart with his exceptional hospitality and great sense of humor, and will make you and your pup feel right at home! If you’ve ever considered hiring a trainer for your fur baby, look no further. John is the PERFECT match for you!

My inquiry on Thumbtack yielded a quick response from Holland K9 Services. Within 24 hours of my initial inquiry, John and I were on the phone discussing my needs. I have a disability upon which a service dog would have a tremendously positive effect. John and I discussed my options. What I liked most about John was that he was frank and upfront about the process. Two other trainers who contacted me used the word “guaranteed.” We’re talking about a dog. I did not need someone selling me pie in the sky. John returns phone calls promptly. I tend to be an anxious person, so in my case, that was a lot of phone calls. Yet John was both kind and professional every time we spoke. My dog was a challenge. I know this because John was, as I said, upfront and honest throughout the process. I think his professionalism shined in that his dogged (pun intended) determination was such that he did what was necessary, taking extra time to do so, to get Tiger to where he is today. Yet in spite of the additional time involved, there was no mention of additional cost. We have a long way to go. Tiger is a service dog so having a trainer who is going to stick with me until we get the job done is important. When we started John made sure I understood that when Tiger came home, the job was only halfway completed. The John and Tiger part of the training was complete but the Steve and Tiger portion of the training would take some time. John’s work ethic is such that I know Tiger is and will be an incredible service dog and that John will stick with me as long as needed to achieve that goal. The other point I wanted to touch on is value. I am extremely pleased with the cost for all that John is providing me. To say it is an excellent value would be an understatement. I would highly recommend Holland K9 Services.

John was a pleasure to work with. We started working with John when our puppy was 12 weeks old and helped us started out on the right foot. He helped us build really strong obedience, house manners, and reliable off leash work.
John was very accommodaing of my schedule and my kids. I would recommend John to anyone.

About the Trainer

Holland K9 Services is a professional dog training business based in Charlotte, NC, founded in 2008 and rebranded from K9 Hangout and Dogmatic Training. They specialize in tailored dog training programs focused on obedience, behavior modification, service dog training, and working dog training. Their approach is science-based, avoiding one-size-fits-all methods by customizing training plans for each dog and owner. They do not offer boarding or daycare services, focusing exclusively on training. Their programs guarantee lifelong support with free tune-ups if a dog regresses. Training begins in a controlled facility using positive reinforcement and progresses to real-world public settings with distractions. They train dogs of all ages and sizes for basic obedience, aggression, anxiety, barking, recall, and more.

Their founder, John Holland, has over 10 years of experience and holds degrees in Political Science and Criminal Justice from UNC-Charlotte, having dedicated years to studying animal behavior science. He trains dogs for service and therapy roles, helping owners with disabilities, and also works with commercial and protection dogs. All training is rooted in established animal behavior principles, and trainers can explain the rationale behind every technique used.
