Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Holland K9 Services offers Pet Dog Obedience, Service and Therapy Training, and Working Dog programs. The Pet Dog Obedience program is a minimum of 10 weeks and focuses on teaching the basic five commands (sit, stay, down, come, heel) off-leash, regardless of distractions, and serves as the foundation for solving behavior problems.

The Service Dog (SD) and Therapy Dog (TD) programs require the Pet Dog Obedience program as a prerequisite. These programs involve building a tailored curriculum to assist disabled handlers in real-world scenarios and fine-tuning obedience commands. The Working Dog program, which also requires Pet Dog Obedience if the client provides the dog, offers training in protection and scent detection for various applications, from home protection to commercial and government needs.

Sessions are typically scheduled weekly, either at their facility or in various locations as needed. Training begins at their facility using positive reinforcement in a controlled environment to avoid distractions. As training progresses, distractions are added, and eventually, training moves to public areas for real-world situations. Training is suspended once the dog performs tasks as outlined in the contract and the owner feels comfortable, with continued support for any future issues.

About the Trainer

Holland K9 Services is a dog training business that offers comprehensive programs for pet dog obedience, service and therapy dog training, and working dog training. Their obedience program is designed to teach the basic five commands—sit, stay, down, come, and heel—all off-leash, aiming for a level of obedience just below that of a police or service dog, regardless of distractions. This foundational obedience is also used as the starting point for addressing various behavior problems.

They utilize positive reinforcement techniques, beginning training in a controlled facility environment to minimize distractions. As dogs progress, distractions are gradually introduced, and training moves to public areas to prepare dogs and handlers for real-world situations. Holland K9 Services guarantees all training for the life of the dog, offering free involvement if a dog regresses and providing free tune-ups.

For service and therapy dogs, they build tailored curricula to assist disabled handlers in real-world scenarios, fine-tuning obedience commands for any situation. Their working dog programs include training for protection and scent detection, preparing dogs to fit into any setting from home protection to commercial applications. They train dogs provided by clients or can provide their own high-caliber dogs for these specialized programs.
