Jim’s K9 Nose Work Training

Classes begin January 7th on Wednesday nights from 5:30 am to 6:30 am at the VFW in Elgin, Texas. Sessions focus on teaching dogs to locate target odors using positive reinforcement. Handlers learn to read their dog’s cues and communicate findings to judges, simulating AKC Scent Work trials. Classes are ongoing weekly with no stated end date or session packages.

Jim’s K9 Nose Work Training offers scent work classes based on the sport of AKC Scent Work, which mimics the work of professional detection dogs. Dogs search for hidden cotton swabs saturated with essential oils (Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress) in designated search areas, turning their natural sniffing instinct into a rewarding game. This sport is ideal for all dog breeds and sizes, especially helpful for building confidence in shy dogs. Unlike other dog sports, the handler follows the dog’s lead, making the dog the star of the activity. Classes are held at the VFW in Elgin, Texas, and are designed to strengthen the bond between dog and handler through teamwork and positive engagement.

The program is open to puppies, adolescents, adults, and senior dogs, with no breed restrictions. Training focuses on natural scent detection skills, recall, and communication between dog and handler. No prior training experience is required, and the classes are structured to be fun and low-pressure for both dogs and owners.
