For Police/Protection K9s, courses cover K9 Psychology, including understanding drives, identifying problems, and formulating game plans. Training involves classroom video work, proper equipment use (flat collar, pinch collar, e-collar), obedience to control work, open area searches, grid work, all phases of detection (narcotics/explosives), environmental effects on scent work, multi-dimensional and multi-surface tracking, reading K9 proximity alerts, article search, officer survival, and current case law. Live mock scenarios are used for proofing K9 teams in vehicle, building, and area searches, tracking, and all phases of patrol work.
Detection Work includes imprinting new K9s on odor or improving seasoned K9s, focusing on narcotics, explosives, animal parts (poaching), insects (bedbugs), human odor (cadaver), and articles. Control Work encompasses e-collar conditioning, position training for control, on-lead and off-lead obedience, environmental conditioning, and socializing.
