Testimonials

Val has been the absolute best at training me to get a handle on my two Yorkies! The two of them were masters of controlling me but that has been changed since meeting Val. I started seeing positive changes right away and continue to be amazed at how well the two of them are responding. Val, your training expertise is outstanding and Romeo, Hazel and I are very thankful for your help.
– Client

I’m really grateful for the help Val gave my family with our 9 year old chihuahua mix. She was definitely ruling the roost and now my partner and I have the tools to keep our baby safe and keep our sanity. After 9+ years of bad communication, Val was able to help us regain control in a matter of weeks. I was honestly blown away with the changes I’ve seen in my dog. I would absolutely recommend using the K-9 Psychologist for any training needs you may have.
– Client

We picked up a young rescue from Paws and wanted to give her (and us) every opportunity to succeed. Val is definitely an amazing resource right here in our own back yard. Expectations are clear and communication is excellent. If there was a way to give 6 stars, we would definitely do it. Thanks again Val from both of us and Roo.

About the Trainer

Val DeSantis, known as The K-9 Psychologist, is a Certified Master Trainer and Certified Behavioral Consultant with nearly 30 years of experience providing private, in-home dog training for dogs of all ages and their owners. He specializes in behavior modification for issues like aggression, anxiety, fear, excessive barking, separation anxiety, resource guarding, and destructive behavior, using a customized, insight-driven approach that matches the dog’s unique learning style. Val is certified by the American Kennel Club as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and holds a canine first aid certification from the American Red Cross. He trains puppies, adolescents, adults, and senior dogs, including service dogs, and offers virtual training via Skype for remote clients. His methods are behavior-based and draw from multiple proven techniques, avoiding one-size-fits-all training. He also offers a free newsletter, a blog, and a published book, “Tails From The Barkside,” to support dog owners with ongoing education.

Val emphasizes building the owner’s leadership role to improve dog behavior, helping families establish clear communication and respect. He provides specialized programs for new puppies, older dog adoptions, and dogs with physical challenges, and includes poison proofing and socialization in his services. His approach avoids blaming the dog when training fails, instead adapting methods to suit the individual dog’s needs.

He offers both in-person in-home sessions and virtual training, making his services accessible to a wide range of clients. Val’s clients report significant improvements in their dogs’ behavior, including better obedience, reduced anxiety, and successful service dog preparation.

He also provides training for families preparing for a new baby, dogs afraid of loud noises like thunder, and dogs who have “forgotten” training due to lack of consistent leadership.
