Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Balanced Training

K-9 Training Center offers two main training programs: Basic Dog Training and Police Dog Training.

Basic Training is for dogs 16 weeks to 3 years old, with puppy obedience for dogs up to 1 year and full obedience for dogs 1-3 years. Training sessions are recommended daily initially, then twice a week, in 15-20 minute sessions. This program teaches voice commands (Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Off, Easy, Leave It), leash commands (Sit, Lay Down, Turn Left or go easy, Leave it & come back to me), and hand signals (Sit, Down, Here, Heel & Stay).

Police Dog Training involves a 4-6 week training school and covers aspects like Search & Rescue, Tracking & Apprehension, Bomb Dogs, and Sportsman Tracking. The facility includes over 200,000 square feet of indoor training scenarios and 2,000 acres of tracking grounds.

About the Trainer

K-9 Training Center is a full-time dog training facility located in Tupelo, MS, owned by Mary Ann and Steve Shaffer, who purchased the business in 2017. The center’s lead trainer, Tyrone Oliver, has 12 years of experience.

They offer comprehensive training for both basic obedience and specialized working dogs, including police dogs. The facility boasts over 200,000 square feet of indoor training scenarios and 2,000 acres of tracking grounds.

In addition to training, K-9 Training Center provides boarding services for dogs, requiring up-to-date shot records and food supply for the visit. They also sell K9 dogs, which come with American Working Dog Certification, imprinting with four odors, tracking, started bite work, a 5-week training course, and a 1-year health guarantee.

Accomplishments

The K-9 Training Center is owned by Steve and Mary Ann Shaffer. Steve Shaffer became certified as a handler and trainer with the help of Gary Dodds, the original founder.

Eight dogs trained or helped trained by the Shaffers are currently working in law enforcement. One of their dogs, Gunner, achieved second place in a state law enforcement association competition. The lead trainer, Tyrone Oliver, has 12 years of experience specializing in puppy and full obedience training.
