Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Positive Reinforcement Only
Kaleidoscope Dog Services offers personalized, science-based training programs focusing on building trust, confidence, and positive behavior. Their approach is reward-based, fun, and effective, avoiding aversive tools.
For puppies, training starts as early as 3-16 weeks, which is the critical socialization period. Private puppy lessons begin in the home once the puppy has at least one set of vaccines, focusing on socialization, confidence building, and foundational skills like charging the marker, release words, focus, sit, and down. They offer 8- and 10-session private training packages for puppies, with each session lasting 45 minutes. After private training, puppies can transition to 6- or 12-session group manners classes to practice skills with distractions.
For adult dogs and rescue dogs, training focuses on basic obedience, manners, and addressing specific behavioral challenges like jumping, leash pulling, distraction, stealing food, fear of car rides, nervousness, and lack of confidence. They offer 6- or 8-session private training packages tailored to unique needs, with a focus on real-world training in a stress-free environment. Group classes (6 or 12 sessions) are available for clients who have completed a private package, allowing dogs to practice skills with distractions and improve socialization.
They also specialize in Fear and Anxiety and Leash Reactivity behavior modification, primarily through private lessons. For fear and anxiety, the plan includes understanding root causes, counter-conditioning, desensitization, confidence building, management techniques, and ongoing support. For leash reactivity (for small breed dogs under 35 pounds only), training starts in the home to build foundational behaviors, focusing on understanding triggers, counter-conditioning, desensitization, and building focus and calm behavior on walks. Both fear/anxiety and leash reactivity training recommend starting with 8 or 10 private lessons. The trainer is also a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator and offers CGC testing and preparation.

Testimonials
“I periodically wonder how things would be working out if we had gone with a different trainer who used choke chains or even just wanted to teach sit, stay and so on. Clearly he needed the sensitivity you brought to his post shelter life. So thank you for working with us and getting Cody pointed in the right direction.”
– K Kasworm and Cody
“Julie is AMAZING! I have a COVID dog who didn’t get the socialization she needed when she was a puppy. She was fearful, had separation anxiety, and guarded everything, including me. My dog loves Julie and gets so excited when she sees her. Julie has been very creative in finding solutions to move my dog forward. My dog’s anxiety is way down, she doesn’t guard the way she used to and people can actually touch her now. Over the years with the multitude of dogs and trainers I’ve worked with Julie is absolutely one of the best.”
– C Simpson and Maggie
“Julie trained our dog Shadow and did an excellent job. We consider her an expert. We have used other trainers in the past for other dogs we had, and no one has ever showed the talents and experience as she has. Whomever has the benefit of Julie training their dog, will truly have the best trained service dog out, bar none.”
– R & T Dunker and Shadow
