Testimonials
“Our Staffordshire terrier Mocha was impossible to walk on a leash and had intense reactivity that had resulted in nipping that was bordering full on biting. Truly, Kat helped save Mocha’s life as I can now take her with me in public safely–which is especially important as Mocha is a special needs dog with semi-frequent vet trips.”
– Kaja and Mocha
“Kat helped us learn to “talk” to Lammie and set him up for success. What she did for our relationship with our dog has been life-changing, and it happened in only 5 sessions. We now know how to communicate with Lammie, and he understands our expectations. Investing in sessions with Kat the Dog Lady will be the best thing for you if you want to have a great relationship with your dog or if you’re trying to solve behavior issues.”
– Liz and Lammie
“Kat is the real deal! She helped us when a pet “behaviorist” told us it was best to put our Bella down. That was 3 years ago and Bella is doing great! Our Bella now understands she is not the boss of the house and has more patience with smaller dogs and crazy puppies. Kat has taught us so much and she is still there for us if we ever have questions. Thank you Kat!”
– Patsy and Bella
About the Trainer
Kat the Dog Lady is a personalized dog training business founded in 2023 by Katelyn (Kat) DeBusk, a certified dog trainer with 10 years of experience in animal rescue, rehabilitation, and behavior modification. Kat specializes in balanced training methods that combine positive reinforcement with corrections and redirection to teach dogs appropriate behaviors while helping owners learn how to communicate effectively with their dogs. Services include in-home private lessons, puppy training, loose leash walking, behavior modification for reactivity and aggression, and customized programs like the Home Schooled Package for dogs whose owners are away during the day. Kat also offers lifetime support, monthly pack walks, and tools like slip collars, drag leashes, and longlines. Additional services include dog walking, pet sitting, and pet taxi transport for clients. Kat emphasizes building a strong human-dog bond and tailoring training to each dog’s unique temperament and the owner’s lifestyle.
Kat works with dogs of all ages and breeds, including mixed breeds, and has successfully helped dogs with bite histories, fear-based reactivity, resource guarding, and leash aggression. Her training philosophy centers on the equation: “Don’t do that + Do this instead = Good Boy/Good Girl.” She uses tools such as slip leashes, head halters, prong collars, and e-collars when necessary, always prioritizing safety and effectiveness. Kat’s approach is hands-on and owner-focused, ensuring clients can continue training successfully after sessions end.
She also provides a free phone consultation and offers a discounted evaluation for rescued or adopted dogs within 30 days of adoption. Her canine coach, Grayson, a mixed-breed dog with a history of behavioral challenges, exemplifies the effectiveness of her balanced training method.
Accomplishments
Katelyn (Kat) DeBusk is a certified dog trainer through the Animal Behavior College. She has over 10 years of hands-on experience working with rescued and shelter dogs at V Animal Sanctuary, Nevada Humane Society, SPCA Reno, and a local Las Vegas training facility. She founded Kat the Dog Lady in August 2023 after years of rehabilitation and behavior modification work. Her training approach has successfully transformed dogs with severe reactivity and bite histories, earning high praise from clients.
How to Get Started!
Prospective clients begin with a free phone consultation to discuss their dog’s needs and receive personalized advice. Kat recommends an in-home evaluation ($150) as the first step to assess the dog, identify behavior issues, and recommend a tailored training program. Clients who book a training package within 48 hours of the evaluation can apply the evaluation fee toward their total balance.
