All training, including behavior modification, is reward-based using treats and praise, with negative or physical punishment explicitly avoided. Maureen’s method begins with establishing clear communication, followed by a four-component plan: showing acceptable alternative behaviors, coaching owners on management, implementing mild consequences, and ensuring consistency. She also employs a “musical dog method” for anxiety and uses a verbal clicker (‘YES’) and a no-reward marker (‘NO’) for clear communication.

Training classes are personalized and conducted in the client’s home, often weekly, focusing on basic commands (Sit, Stay, Down, Off, Come, Leave It, Drop It, Stay In, Stand, Roll, Paw) with both hand signals and verbal cues. For reactivity, she uses high-value rewards and works within the dog’s behavior threshold, sometimes utilizing a stooge dog. Boot Camp training is an intensive program where dogs are trained by Maureen, covering crate training, potty training, basic commands, leash walking, and socialization, with skills then transferred to the owner.
