About the Trainer
Let’s Talk Dogs is a dog training business led by Dorothy Turley, CPDT-KA, CNWI, specializing in positive, common-sense training methods for dogs of all ages and temperaments. The business offers K9 Nose Work® classes, private lessons, group classes, seminars, and workshops focused on scent detection as a fun, confidence-building activity. K9 Nose Work® uses natural dog instincts to hunt for scents like birch, anise, and clove in four environments: interior, exterior, vehicles, and containers. Classes are designed to be dog-friendly, with one dog working at a time, making them ideal for dogs with social anxiety or reactivity. Instructors include Dorothy Turley, Rachelle Bailey-Austin, and Mary Oberson. Training emphasizes building the dog’s independence, odor obedience, and handler-dog teamwork using reward-based methods. The business also offers auditing options for owners whose dogs cannot attend class in person, allowing them to learn and practice at home. Additional resources include articles, videos, and links to support dog owners. Training is conducted at the Canine Co-op in Lacey, WA.
The business supports all dog types and ages, including puppies as young as 5 months, and accommodates dogs with fearfulness, reactivity, or separation issues. No corrections or aversive tools are used; training is purely positive. They also host trials and ORTs (Odor Recognition Tests) for those interested in competition. The program structure includes foundational 6-week sessions (Introduction to Nose Work Levels 1 & 2, Introduction to Odor Levels 1 & 2), with opportunities to advance to higher levels.
Let’s Talk Dogs promotes a calm, respectful environment with clear parking and etiquette guidelines, and follows COVID-19 safety protocols including hand sanitizing, distancing, and limited lobby access. They encourage communication with instructors before attending and offer flexible scheduling options.
Services are exclusively training-focused; no grooming, boarding, walking, or retail services are offered.
