Training includes private in-home lessons covering basic commands and common behavioral issues, with an option for lessons at the trainer’s home at a reduced rate. Behavior consultations involve an in-home evaluation to discuss problems, establish goals, and provide a training plan. A 1-2 week board and train program is offered for basic commands and some behavioral/house training issues. Additional training includes Rally obedience, novice obedience, drafting/carting, and conformation training, available as individual or semi-private lessons. Herding lessons specialize in instinct tests and beginner dogs, offered privately, in small groups, or for individual practice.

Laurie Carmody, owner of K-9 Academy of Western Mass (formerly Long Island K-9 Academy), is a professional dog trainer with 30 years of experience. She offers a wide range of services including basic and advanced obedience, rally obedience, novice competitive obedience, and specialized training for behavioral issues like house training problems, jumping, barking, chewing, and counter surfing. Her expertise extends to new puppy training, breed handling (conformation), herding lessons with sheep and ducks, drafting/carting, and agility.

Laurie also provides boarding and doggie daycare in a home environment, emphasizing physical activity and socialization, with dogs sleeping indoors and participating in daily play sessions. She offers a “board and train” program for basic commands and some behavioral issues. Additionally, she provides nutritional counseling, raw diet recommendations, and weight loss programs. Laurie is also a breeder of Champion Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs under the kennel name Matterhorn GSMD.
