Luttrell Kennels offers three primary dog training programs: Intro to Hunting, Gun Dog, and Advanced, all tailored for gun dogs. The Intro to Hunting program, a 4-week course for dogs 5 months and older, focuses on basic obedience and introduces dogs to birds and guns, covering flushing, marking, and water retrieves. The Gun Dog program, lasting 12 weeks, builds upon foundational skills such as obedience, manners, collar conditioning, and force fetching, progressing to refined bird delivery, field control, and steadiness in the duck blind.

The Advanced program, also 12 weeks, specializes in handling for blind retrieves, which is crucial for serious waterfowlers and hunt test competitors. This training includes specific commands like whistle “Sit,” back cast, force to pile, wagon wheel, baseball, double T, swim by, memory, and cold blinds. All programs incorporate handler training to develop strong teamwork between dog and owner. Additionally, they provide private lessons for any training level and prepare dogs for HRC/AKC Retriever hunt tests, ensuring readiness for specific test environments and rules. They utilize various birds, including pigeons, chuckers, pheasants, and ducks, to accommodate diverse hunting preferences.

Pricing Summary

Training programs are priced at $300 per week, which includes tax and birds. The Intro to Hunting program is 4 weeks for $1,200. The Gun Dog and Advanced programs are both 12 weeks for $3,600.

Private lessons are available at $75 per hour, plus the cost of live birds. Boarding services are offered at $30 per night when space is available.

Policies

Current vaccination certificates are required at check-in. This includes DHLP-P and Intra-TracII (Bordetella) vaccinations, which must be current within 1 year, and Rabies vaccination, which must be current within 2 years.

John Luttrell, a professional dog trainer since 1995, established the facility with a focus on maximizing dogs’ training potential and ensuring their well-being. The facility provides a clean, safe, heated, and air-conditioned environment for dogs, with kennels disinfected daily and equipped with likits for constant water access. The owner lives on-site to ensure security. Training takes place on 20 acres of on-site land, with access to hundreds more acres in the area, allowing dogs to be exposed to diverse hunting environments such as fields, sloughs, shelter belts, and ponds.

In addition to training, Luttrell Kennels occasionally offers started and finished Labrador gun dogs for sale, as well as puppies from proven bloodlines. They also provide boarding services when space is available and recommend K9 Thrive products for canine digestive health.
