Muncie Obedience Training Club

MOTC offers a variety of training programs for different skill levels and goals. The Companion (Pet) Classes include S.T.A.R. Puppy for puppies 12 weeks to 1 year old, focusing on socialization and basic commands, and Basic Obedience, which prepares dogs of any age for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. Performance Fundamentals introduces basic skills for various dog sports, while Trick Dog classes teach a range of tricks and can lead to AKC Trick Dog titles.

Competition Classes are available for Obedience, Rally, and Scent Work. Competition Obedience offers Novice, Open, and Utility levels, preparing teams for AKC titles through exercises like heeling, jumps, and retrieves. Rally classes focus on teamwork through course navigation, with levels from Novice to Master. Scent Work classes, from Beginners to Nov-Master, teach dogs to detect essential oils in various search environments, preparing them for AKC Scent Work trials.

Classes typically run for 6 or 8 weeks, with 1-hour sessions. Prerequisites vary by class, with some requiring prior class completion or instructor permission. Dogs must be able to work around other dogs without aggression and with minimal distractions.

Pricing Summary

Class pricing varies by program and membership status. S.T.A.R Puppy, Basic Obedience, Performance Fundamentals, and Trick Dog classes are 6-week courses, costing $90 for the public and $54 for MOTC members. Competition Obedience and Nov-Master Scent Work are 8-week courses, costing $120 for the public and $72 for MOTC members. Rally classes are 6-week courses, costing $90 for the public and $54 for members. Beginner Scent Work is a 6-week course, costing $90 for the public, $54 for MOTC members, or $36 for repeating members. A $3 service fee applies for credit card payments.

Membership pricing includes Single ($65.00), Household ($130.00), Junior (16 years and younger, $32.00), and Senior (60+ years for a two-year membership, $40.00). Members receive substantial class discounts and free access to “Rent a Ring” sessions, which cost $10 for 10 minutes or $5 for 5 minutes for non-members. Trial entry fees are $20-$25 for FastCAT, $25 for Rally/Obedience, and $25-$45 for Scent Work. Payments are collected on the first day of class or can be paid ahead.

The Muncie Obedience Training Club (MOTC), established in 1946, promotes responsible dog ownership through training, good sportsmanship, and fostering a bond between dogs and handlers. The club aims to make dog training rewarding and fun for both the dog and the handler, welcoming all breeds and mixed breeds in their classes.

MOTC offers various levels of classes categorized into companion (pet) and competition classes. They are affiliated with the American Kennel Club (AKC) and host sanctioned AKC events such as obedience, rally, scent work trials, and Fast CAT tests.

The club also supports the Delaware County 4-H dog obedience members by providing their air-conditioned facility for practice and continuously sponsoring the local 4-H club. Additionally, MOTC provides free community seminars to the public, covering basic behavior training for puppies to adult dogs, presented by experienced trainers.

Accomplishments

The Muncie Obedience Training Club (MOTC) was founded in 1946, demonstrating over 78 years of experience in promoting responsible dog ownership and training. MOTC is one of only four AKC-affiliated dog clubs in Indiana that hold sanctioned events, out of nearly 5,000 nationwide.

Many of MOTC’s instructors are AKC Registered CGC Evaluators. Bob Janek and Mary Janek are both AKC Judges. Mary Janek has been training dogs since 1969, and Bobbi Siccardi has been training dogs since 198 (year incomplete). Laura Beth Waldrep’s dog, Storm, achieved a notable accomplishment by becoming the first Black and Tan Coonhound to earn the Rally Master and RAE titles in AKC Rally. Anne Wiggin has over 30 years of experience training and exhibiting dogs.

How to Get Started!

To get started, clients can complete the online registration form. Upon receipt of the form, a confirmation email will be sent within 2 to 3 days, followed by an email reminder about a week before the class begins. For Scent Work classes, clients are advised to contact the instructor directly to secure their place.
