Flyball is a relay race involving two teams, each with four dogs and four handlers. Each dog races over four hurdles, triggers a spring-loaded box to release a tennis ball, catches the ball, and returns over the hurdles to the finish line. Handlers release their dogs in sequence, aiming for precise passes at the start/finish line. The fastest team to complete the race without errors wins.
Training focuses on fundamentals such as box work, recall exercises, motivational drills, and handler training. The team emphasizes working with individual dogs and conducting team drills, with all members contributing to help each dog and handler reach their full potential.
While formal classes are not currently offered, interested individuals can inquire about drop-in opportunities during the team’s flexible practice days.
About the Trainer
Mutts in Motion Flyball Team, established in 2004, is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership through the sport of flyball. The team currently comprises 35 people and 50 dogs, fostering a family-oriented environment.
They actively compete in sanctioned flyball tournaments and perform at various events, including University Basketball, Football, and NBA halftime shows. Beyond competition, Mutts in Motion is committed to community service, participating in dog rescue adopt-a-thons, supporting local non-profit shelters with spay/neuter programs, and organizing annual pet food drives for the elderly.
The organization also engages in educational outreach, performing at schools to teach children about responsible pet ownership and the joys of playing with their dogs. Their training methods for flyball include fundamentals like box work, recall exercises, motivational drills, and handler training, with all team members contributing to each dog and handler’s development.
While they are not currently offering formal flyball classes, they do provide drop-in opportunities for those interested in the sport during their practice days. These sessions are led by seasoned trainers, many of whom have 15-30 years or more of experience in flyball.
