Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

My Sidekick Dog Training’s process begins with a 2-hour Behavior Consultation, which can be virtual or in-person depending on the dog’s needs. During this consultation, information is gathered, the dog’s behavior is assessed, and clients receive an in-depth explanation of what is driving the behavior, including subtle dog communication and behavior functions. A safety and management plan is collaboratively developed, along with an overview of the behavior modification plan and initial skills training. Emailed notes are provided after the consultation.

Following the consultation, clients can schedule 1-hour training sessions individually or as part of a package. These sessions can take place at the client’s home, the training yard, or another location. Programs range from introductory 4-session packages to address behavioral issues, to 6-session packages for household conflicts and reactivity/aggression, to 10-session packages for more serious issues like leash reactivity, resource guarding, fear, and aggression. The 16-session package is recommended for severe cases including anxiety, fear, phobia, and aggression towards people and dogs, especially for dogs with a bite history or multiple dogs with issues. A Board & Train program is also offered for intensive behavior modification and life skills, requiring a prior consultation and suitability assessment.

Testimonials

“After his first session I could already tell he was more happy and he was less stressed. Before working with Ash, just walking down from the second floor of our building to take Waffles out to go to the bathroom gave me a huge amount of stress and anxiety. I was constantly terrified of him biting another person or dog. After his first session with her I could already tell he was more happy and he was less stressed than he’d been in months. It felt like I was getting my sweet boy back. After a few weeks of working with her, I no longer felt overwhelmed by the idea of taking him outside and encountering other people and dogs because she has given us both all the tools we need to be successful. It’s SO exciting to see the progress he’s making. I don’t know what we would have done without Ash!”
– Alyssa

“…Ash provided a non judgmental, safe space to figure out the root cause of the concerns… Ash’s relaxed but also compassionate and precise approach helped us to easily learn but also allowed our dog to become comfortable with them and slowly rewire his nervous system and unlearn some unsafe behaviors….”
– Rachel

“I have a had a great experience getting training, management advice, and moral support to help me and my dog who has dog reactivity, high prey drive, and anxiety. It can be incredibly stressful and isolating realizing a newly adopted pet struggles with behavior issues and Ash was able to assess my dog, give concrete advice for safety and management in the day to day, refer us to vet behaviorists and other resources, and help extensively with training. We have done training session packages as well as some board and train. It is a slow journey and there are no quick or exciting fixes with serious behavior cases, but we have been so grateful to have such an experienced, thoughtful, and compassionate trainer.”
– Shannon
