Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Positive Reinforcement Only
The training process begins with an initial in-home or Zoom/phone consultation to determine the root cause of problematic behaviors. During this session, a complete history of the dog is taken, and the trainer observes and works with the dog. A positive-only treatment plan is then developed on the spot.
Follow-up visits are available as needed, with various package options depending on the dog’s individual needs. The success of the treatment plan relies on consistent and repeated follow-through by the client at home. The trainer emphasizes that there is no “cookie-cutter” approach, and all plans are designed to fit each dog’s unique requirements. Puppy training packages are also offered, spread out over time as the puppy grows.

About the Trainer
North Florida K9 Behavior Center is owned and operated by Jon C Wedemeyer, ISCP.Dipl.Canine.Prac, MCMA. Jon has had a lifelong love for dogs, stemming from his first dog in kindergarten, which taught him how dogs think and communicate. He emphasizes that dog training is always about the dogs and their people, not the trainer.
Jon’s training philosophy is centered on being a “dog Listener,” observing and understanding dogs’ body language, eyes, and vocalizations. He exclusively uses Positive Reinforcement and Rewards-Based methods, along with scientifically proven behavior modification techniques. He believes in patience, compassion, and helping dogs reshape their behavior at a comfortable pace, while also training the human to work with their dog.
His primary job is to understand a dog’s issues, establish goals, create a treatment plan, and teach owners how to implement it. He views the process as a team effort, always prioritizing the dog’s well-being. He warns against “Dog Whisperer” claims, stating that such approaches often involve dominance, intimidation, or abuse, which he strongly condemns.
Jon’s professional experience began in 2012 assisting an acupuncture vet, where he learned to keep dogs calm during treatments. Since July 2014, he has volunteered at the Humane Society and other rescues in Gainesville, working with stressed, frightened, and aggressive dogs to rebuild their trust. He opened North Florida K9 Behavior Center in 2016 and has since worked with almost 2,000 dogs. He also offers resources for dog-friendly businesses and shelters/rescues.
Accomplishments

He also completed the Certificate Course in Canine Emotion and Cognition at Duke University.
He has volunteered at the Humane Society and other rescues in Gainesville since July 2014, working with hundreds of rescue dogs. Since opening North Florida K9 Behavior Center in 2016, he has worked with almost 2,000 dogs. He is also an authorized Mentor Trainer for Animal Behavior College (ABC).
How to Get Started!
If a dog suddenly changes its personality or behavior, the first step is to take it to a veterinarian to rule out any underlying physical or medical causes. Once a clean bill of health is received, clients can contact North Florida K9 Behavior Center.
The engagement process begins with an initial in-home or Zoom/phone consultation. During this consult, the trainer will take a complete history of the dog, discuss the problem behavior in detail, and work with the dog to assess the situation. A positive-only treatment plan will be developed on the spot. Clients can reach out via phone, email, or by filling out the contact form on the website.
