Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Balanced Training

Obedient K-9 offers various training programs. For puppies aged 8-16 weeks, a vet exam, first vaccinations, and good health are required. For all training dogs, DHLP, Parvo, and Rabies vaccinations are mandatory, with Corona and Bordatella recommended (Bordatella 10 days prior). Owners must provide current vaccination records.

In-Home Dog Training for dogs 16 weeks and older involves a certified trainer coming to your home to teach proper leash handling, training techniques, tools, and how obedience relates to everyday behavior problems. Commands taught include heel with automatic-sit, sit and down at your side, sit and down from the front, sit and down in motion, come, stay, and loose leash walking. Private Lessons, also for dogs 16 weeks and older, are offered lesson-by-lesson to address specific behavior problems, new issues, or for refreshers. Blocks of sessions can be purchased, with upgrade options available.

Basic and Advanced Obedience Training progresses from on-leash to off-leash, teaching dogs to respond to basic commands both inside and outside, verbally, and with hand signals. This program also includes the “Place” command for self-control in a designated area. Drop-Off Dog Training is ideal for busy schedules, allowing dogs to learn basic or advanced commands while owners are at work. Owners drop off their dog before work and pick them up afterward, with the trainer reviewing learned commands for home reinforcement. Spaces are limited, and an evaluation is required.

Residency Dog Training programs involve dogs staying at Obedient K-9 for 3 to 20 days, suitable for owners with limited time, those unsure of the task, or during extended vacations. These programs include 1-4 private follow-up sessions, with the first session held on pick-up day. A limited number of dogs are accepted to ensure optimal training, and an evaluation is required before enrollment. Group Dog Training Classes are offered to graduates of their obedience training (or comparable classes) who have a solid obedience foundation, building on basic obedience and adding distraction diversification for real-world situations. These classes are not recommended for initial obedience training. Puppy Preschool, for puppies 8-16 weeks old, educates owners on puppy development, needs, and care, emphasizing setting limits, proper socialization, Q&A, handling exercises, and important ownership topics. It includes a one-on-one evaluation and three rotating Saturday classes.

Testimonials

“My overall experience was excellent with Anissa! I liked the fact that their training was based in obedience and respect, not treat-driven. Our dog result was great. The training made sense that when our dogs are trained, they listen to us better and do what we want. I was totally overwhelmed with our two terriers, and not really enjoying our time together. I believe the training totally helped not only me personally feel better, but also helped our family become better at handling Bobby and Beanie. Anissa was great! She was thorough, very professional and we felt very comfortable with her training us. She was open and honest and not afraid to give us some great suggestions when we ran into some roadblocks. Anissa and Kory’s facility was clean and very professional – I would recommend Obedient K-9 to anyone looking for dog training specialists!”
– Bob and Lois S.

“Samson wasn’t the only one who learned how to be a owner / pet in Obedient K-9’s Puppy Pre-School. The information from the classes was fantastic! Things were explained and information was easy to understand. I loved how each dog was passed around to other people for socialization! This lead to positive interaction for myself and Samson.”
– Michael C.

“We were very satisfied with the Obedient K-9 experience. Mary Jane completed the 10-day boarding program – we were amazed by her progress at the end of the boarding. We noticed changes right away. After we began our lessons, we could begin to see Mary Jane’s potential. Mary Jane loved training with us. The lessons each week were clear and easy to follow. Also, we never felt alone… if we had questions, they were answered. We appreciate the training, advice, and encouragement we received.”
– Claudia D.

About the Trainer

Obedient K-9, LLC aims to enhance the relationship between dog owners and their pets by establishing a foundation of communication through obedience training. They educate owners on necessary tools, handling skills, and aspects of dog behavior to help dogs fulfill their potential.

The business offers a variety of services tailored to meet individual pet and owner lifestyle needs. They emphasize that every dog is unique and cannot be trained with a singular “cookie cutter” method. Therefore, each dog’s training is individualized based on their personality, aptitude for learning, social development, past and present behavior, and owner goals.

Obedient K-9 uses a balanced, fair, and effective approach that produces real results for real-world situations, fostering mutual respect and trust between dogs and their owners. They also provide temperament testing and breed/rescue selection consultations to assist in choosing the right dog. Additionally, they offer canine education programs for schools and organizations, covering topics like canine behavior, appropriate behavior around dogs for children, and bite prevention. They also provide dog sitting services.

Accomplishments

Anissa Knickerbocker, the Owner and Certified Professional Dog Trainer at Obedient K-9, has been involved with dogs her entire life and trained her first dog over 15 years ago. She pursued professional training by enrolling in an intensive Master Trainer course at the National K-9 Learning Center. This comprehensive course included classroom instruction, hands-on training experience, written testing, and extensive field evaluations under experienced instructors. The National K-9 Learning Center is recognized internationally and approved by the Ohio State Board of Career College and Schools. Anissa is driven by a passion to reduce the number of dogs surrendered to shelters due to behavioral issues, aiming to achieve this by educating and training both owners and their dogs.

How to Get Started!

To begin, clients should call to schedule a free evaluation. This pre-enrollment evaluation is crucial for assessing the dog’s needs and determining the most suitable training program. It is a mandatory step for enrollment in residency programs and group classes, with group classes also requiring pre-qualification. For Puppy Pre-School, the process starts with a one-on-one evaluation, followed by participation in three rotating Saturday classes.
