Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Balanced Training
Equipment:
- ✓ E-Collars
**All Breed Basic Obedience**: This on-lead program builds a strong foundation of communication and trust through positive reinforcement and consistent training. It focuses on essential commands and attention training, establishing the owner as the dog’s leader, and introduces e-collar conditioning gradually.
**All Breed Advanced Obedience**: A six-week course for all breeds, this program focuses on reliable off-leash control and precision. Dogs master a reliable recall, precise heel (on and off leash), solid sit and stay in various situations, and a dependable kennel command. Dogs are collar conditioned for off-lead responsiveness.
**Basic Gun Dog**: A 4-month program for dogs six months or older, covering basic obedience, collar conditioning, and force fetch. Dogs learn to perform single marked retrieves, deliver to hand, and remain steady to shot. Training also includes retrieving through decoys and off a dog stand or hut.
**Advanced Gun Dog**: This program is an additional 4-6 months for dogs that have completed the Basic Gun Dog program. Dogs learn to run blind retrieves, where the handler guides the dog to a unseen bird using hand signals and a whistle.
**AKC Field Trial Program**: This program is for dogs from pedigrees specifically bred for field trials. It prepares retrievers for challenging AKC Field Trial competitions, which test mental toughness, intelligence, and obedience at the highest levels.
**Puppy Head Start**: For puppies 4-6 months of age, this program teaches proper socialization skills, treat training for basic commands, name recognition, and introduction to water, birds, and gunfire.
**Snake Avoidance Clinic**: An annual clinic held each August, specializing in training pets and hunting dogs to avoid dangerous snakes. It uses live, harmless Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, and Water Moccasins to introduce dogs to the sound, smell, and sight of snakes, using e-collar stimulation when the dog alerts. Annual training and rattlesnake vaccination are suggested for continued safety.

About the Trainer
Grant and Alex Huff, with a combined 35 years of experience, train dogs to an advanced level for AKC hunt tests, duck hunting, and obedience. They both grew up in East Texas with a passion for duck hunting and dogs, which led them to a career working with all breeds. They are dedicated to helping dogs reach their full potential and bridging the knowledge gap between clients and their pets.
Unlike many trainers, Grant and Alex personally conduct all training from start to finish, ensuring each dog receives maximum benefit from their time at One Shot Retrievers. They also spend significant time helping owners understand how to fairly correct and handle their dog once they return home.
One Shot Retrievers offers a variety of programs including All Breed Basic and Advanced Obedience, Basic and Advanced Gun Dog training, an AKC Field Trial program, Puppy Head Start, and an annual Snake Avoidance Clinic. They also provide boarding services for all breeds, strictly based on availability, with dogs aired twice daily in secure, fenced yards. Their facility includes four technical training ponds and security cameras for added safety.
