The Comfort K9 Program is designed for Emergency Responders, providing facility dogs that offer emotional support. It features a unique shared custody model with three options: Trainer Jump Start (80/20 Custody), Joint Custody (40/60 Custody), and Scheduled Visits (20/80 Custody). The program begins with a 12-month structured training plan, followed by a 10-month maintenance plan. Upon completion, ownership of the Comfort K9 is transferred to the facility, and the Comfort K9/Handler team becomes a certified working partnership.

The training program is positive and science-based, using LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive) techniques. It covers Puppy Training (0-5 months, focusing on confidence, manners, and basic behaviors), Basic Obedience (3-8 months, teaching cues and impulse control), Advanced Obedience (8-18 months, refining cues and increasing reliability with distractions), and Public Access (3-24 months, positive exposure to public settings). Dogs undergo Tests and Certifications at 24 months, including Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Certification.

Pricing & Policies

Pricing Summary

The program is comprehensive and includes all costs, such as puppy purchase price, food, medical and grooming, basic supplies, training of the puppy, training of handlers, all printed and online training material, transportation of the puppy, and follow-up sessions for the full program. Monthly payment plans are available to simplify budget proposals and make program pricing attainable. Sponsorship options are also available to help reduce facility costs.

Policies

The program encourages facilities to plan for potential scenarios such as a dog not passing evaluation, developing a behavior or health issue, or retiring, as well as a primary handler leaving the station. These considerations are part of the planning process to ensure program success.

About the Trainer

Paws for Responders, LLC specializes in providing Comfort K9s, which are facility therapy dogs, specifically for Emergency Responder teams and facilities. Their unique program aims to heal and bond these teams through the support of a Comfort K9, addressing emotional wellness needs. They offer a comprehensive program that includes carefully screened, health-tested, and temperament-tested puppies from pre-approved breeders.

A key feature is their “Shared Custody Program,” allowing facilities to co-raise a puppy with a Certified Trainer and/or Certified Puppy Raiser. This program ensures puppies grow up in the facility, bonding with handlers, while reducing the burden on responders. The program includes a 12-month structured training plan followed by a 10-month maintenance plan, after which ownership of the Comfort K9 is transferred to the facility.

Paws for Responders is noted as the only company solely focused on raising and training facility dogs for Emergency Responders, allowing for tailored programs. All program costs, including puppy purchase, food, medical, grooming, basic supplies, and training for both puppy and handlers, are included in the pricing, with monthly payment plans available. They also offer sponsorship options to help reduce facility costs.

Accomplishments

Kelsey Weber is a Certified Dog Trainer and has been a Puppy Raiser since 2004. Paws for Responders is currently the only company solely focused on raising and training facility dogs for Emergency Responders.

How to Get Started!

To get started, facilities can schedule a complimentary consultation to learn more about adding a Comfort K9. The process involves following steps to add a puppy to the program, understanding the puppy training path, and reviewing important considerations, requirements, and FAQs. Facilities will designate Primary and Secondary Handlers, who will receive a comprehensive training program from a Certified Dog Trainer.
