Testimonials

My dog took the beginner’s course here which I would rate a 4/5. Their literature states they train with love and treats and in reality they use more adversive approaches. They were mostly positive in the beginners class and respected my boundaries with my dog who was a young puppy while in the course. I enjoyed the beginners course with instructor Carol although I had hoped for a more positive approach.

I took the intermediate course after completing the beginner’s course and did not return after the first class. The instructor was abusive in my opinion. She yanked my dog by the neck roughly, nearly choking him (he was only 8 months old and still learning.) She kneed him hard in the chest when he tried to jump… I also witnessed her kick at another dog who she was working with. These are cruel actions and debunked training methods…

Absolutely the best training class I have ever attended. These wonderful instructors have taught me that I can train my dog to do anything, even though I thought I was a hopeless softie. My dog and I are currently enrolled in the beginner class and we cannot get enough of it!

About the Trainer

Philadelphia Dog Training Club (PDTC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1938 and affiliated with the American Kennel Club (AKC). They offer group dog training classes ranging from Puppy Kindergarten (Puppy-K) through Advanced Competition Obedience and Rally, open to all dogs regardless of breed or mix. Classes are held in a heated and air-conditioned gym at St. Aloysius Academy in Bryn Mawr, PA. Instructors use a mix of positive reinforcement methods including praise, food, and toys, while also employing corrections in some advanced levels. PDTC provides AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing and hosts AKC Obedience and Rally Trials. They emphasize building a strong owner-dog relationship, teaching dogs how to learn, and eliminating unwanted behaviors through consistent, fair methods.

Instructors include Jenn Weinik (Competitive Obedience), Loretta Rocco (Intermediate and Advanced), Carol Houton (Puppy Kindergarten and Beginner), and Jill Luciano (Rally). All instructors are experienced, with some holding AKC-approved CGC Evaluator credentials. PDTC also offers homework videos and membership options for ongoing support.

The club does not offer private, in-home, board-and-train, or day-training services. All training occurs in a group facility setting.

Accomplishments

PDTC has been operating since 1938 and is an AKC-affiliated organization. Instructors include AKC-approved CGC Evaluators and competition-trained handlers. Jenn Weinik earned OTCH 2 with her Belgian Malinois at age 3. Carol Houton’s Dobermans have earned advanced obedience and rally titles.
