Testimonials
After lesson one with our 18 month old rescue German Shepherd we had a better understanding of how to work with him. Big changes by the end of the lesson. We worked with our dog and two weeks later had Phil come again to help with reactivity to our family, very positive results. Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a knowledgeable and experienced person to help with training.

Phil was absolutely fantastic! He came to help address some behavior issues with my 8-year-old Cairn Terrier, Mia — things like marking in the house, jumping on guests, barking at the TV, and pulling on the leash during stroller walks. With a one-year-old in the house who loves tugging on Mia’s tail and fur, I really needed some guidance on how to manage both worlds calmly and confidently.
Even after just one session, I saw a dramatic improvement. Phil was incredibly professional, patient, and supportive — he pointed out what I was already doing right and helped fine-tune my approach so Mia could respond better. He also set realistic expectations and made it clear that I could reach out anytime, day or night, if I needed help troubleshooting new behaviors.
Both Mia and my baby absolutely adored him (I think they were competing for his attention!). I walked away feeling empowered, reassured, and back in charge — with the tools to stay consistent and firm. I honestly wish I had more “problems” just so I could work with him again.
Highly recommend Phil to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, kind, and results-driven dog trainer!

Phil is an amazing trainer. We had tried Petco which was terrible and then another trainer who wanted to put a prong collar on your 4 month of puppy. Appalled at the idea of that, we reached out to Phil. Phil not only trained our puppy, Bentlee, but also trained my Husband and I! We are on the right track with the correct dog commands and Phil had Bentlee walking on the leash without pulling. He’s going to be a big dog so we are excited to be working with Phil who is definitely an expert. Do not hesitate to call Phil as our dog after one session is actually acting more obedient than ever. Phil is absolutely amazing.

About the Trainer
Phil’s Dog Training offers in-home dog training services in Central Connecticut, focusing on resolving common behavioral issues such as jumping, excessive barking, leash pulling, counter surfing, and reactivity. Phil conducts all training sessions in the client’s home, allowing dogs to learn in their natural environment where behaviors occur, reducing distractions from other dogs and increasing effectiveness. He provides both basic and advanced obedience training, including silent commands, agility, and competition training, and specializes in behavior modification for issues like anxiety, mouthing, and aggression. Phil has over 40 years of experience, having trained dogs since childhood under the mentorship of professional trainer Bruce Giannett, and has worked with veterinarians and in group classes through Cheshire Parks and Recreation. He emphasizes consistency, patience, and clear communication between owner and dog, positioning himself as an interpreter between human and canine behavior.
Phil also teaches group obedience classes at the Cheshire Parks and Recreation Department, but his primary service is private in-home training. He does not offer boarding, daycare, grooming, or pet sitting services. His approach is hands-on, with clients practicing alongside him during sessions, and he provides follow-up support as needed.
Phil has trained dogs of all ages, from puppies to seniors, and has successfully worked with breeds including German Shepherds, Cairn Terriers, Bassets, and mixed breeds. Clients report dramatic improvements after just one session, with many describing him as knowledgeable, patient, and results-driven.
Accomplishments
Phil trained his own German Shepherd, Baron, to win multiple obedience shows and ribbons. He was invited by his mentor Bruce Giannett to demonstrate training techniques to other students. He has run obedience classes for a veterinarian and has worked alongside Bruce Giannett for decades, gaining extensive hands-on experience in both private and group training settings.
