Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only

Purely Positive Dog Training offers a variety of programs tailored to different needs and ages. The “Dog and Baby” program provides in-home lessons, including “Dogs and Storks” and “Dogs and Toddlers” programs, custom-designed to help families integrate their dog peacefully with newborns or toddlers. The “Family Dog Private Training” program includes six in-home sessions, an online family video training program (with content for parents, kids, grandparents, and nannies), and weekly homework emails, all customized to involve the entire family.

Group classes are held at the Isle of Palms Recreation Department and include “Kinderpuppy Class” (12-20 weeks, 6 weeks, focusing on basic commands, socialization, house-training, nipping, and jumping), “Just the Basics Class” (6+ months, 6 weeks, covering basic obedience and manners), “Puppy Junior High” (6-9 months, 6 weeks, for adolescent dogs to master manners with distractions), “Canine Good Citizenship Class” (6 weeks, preparing dogs for the CGC title and therapy work), and “Tricks and Parkour Class” (6 weeks, teaching various tricks and working towards the AKC Trick Dog title).

Private training options include the “Purely Positive Manners Package” for new dog/puppy owners focusing on basic manners, and the “Purely Positive Behavior Package” for serious behavioral issues like aggression, anxiety, or fear. The “Purely Positive Day Training Package” allows the trainer to work with the dog independently, with initial and final sessions involving the family. Virtual coaching and consultations are available worldwide via Zoom and Skype, offering real-time troubleshooting, lesson recordings, written notes, and video analysis.

Puppy-specific training includes private in-home sessions covering potty training, crate training, chewing, basic commands, and socialization. Virtual group classes for puppies and young dogs include “Puppy Preschool” (8-12 weeks, 4 weeks, focusing on routine, crate training, potty training, biting, and basic skills), “Smart Puppy Class” (12-24 weeks, 4 weeks, covering basic skills and polite greetings), and “Teenage Dog Fundamentals” (6-16 months, 4 weeks, for intermediate skills and manners with distractions). A “Trick Dog Class” is also offered virtually for dogs with basic obedience. For separation anxiety, a personalized treatment plan with daily exercises and ongoing support is provided through online sessions.

Testimonials

“Susan with Purely Positive achieved in three weeks ALL the goals I wanted and more, she helped eliminate the challenges we were having with Kona and has taught us all so much. She is patient, kind, straightforward and does an amazing job of providing training techniques that are doable. Susan answered all my concerns, was so helpful & real. Susan really is a genius with animals and I would trust no one else with dog training.”
– Julie Chalupsky

“Susan changed our lives. After a terrible experience with another trainer that sent our fearful dog into a spiral of aggression and dangerous behavior, we thought we were going to be facing a lawsuit soon and might be forced to put him down (he’d bit several of my friends and some strangers). As a behaviorist myself, I thought I would be able to turn him around without the help of another professional. I was wrong. It helped tremendously having an unbiased, third party who could advise our training and supplement our work with the latest techniques and methods designed specifically for fearful dogs. Her knowledge and experience was indispensable. We can finally have friends over again. We can take our dog on walks where he actually ENJOYS being outside instead of cowering in fear and attacking anyone who walks by. We can even take him into stores with us! He’s like a whole new dog and we couldn’t be happier.”
– Kelsey Burnette

“When I first came to Susan years ago, I thought that my dog Sophie was exhibiting ‘bad’ behavior. I was somewhat mortified to learn that it was me that needed the training, as I wasn’t giving her the leadership and guidance that she needed! Since then I have brought countless dogs – both my own and fosters – to Purely Positive. And each time, I learn even more. I have a house full of rescued dogs of all ages and backgrounds, and it is such a delight to have a balanced and healthy ‘pack’! I used to think that all I had to do was love these incredible creatures, but now I know how to be a responsible leader so each member of my family – and our visiting fosters – can thrive and be happy! I can never thank you enough for all you’ve taught me and for all you do to help so many animal lovers in our community!”
