The training teaches dogs to identify the smell of a rattlesnake and avoid it for life. It uses a live, unaltered rattlesnake in a strike-proof cage with plenty of venting, allowing the dog to get a good smell. At the moment the dog’s snout is full of rattlesnake smell, a training collar is activated to deliver a sharp pain.
This process helps the dog associate that specific smell with pain, leading them to avoid it at all costs. Every dog is tested at the end of the class to ensure they are snake-proof. The trainer also offers free re-testing at any future class to maintain confidence in the dog’s training.
About the Trainer
Rattlesnake Avoidance Training-Wenatchee offers specialized dog training focused on teaching dogs to identify and avoid rattlesnakes for life. The training utilizes a live, unaltered rattlesnake kept in a strike-proof cage, allowing dogs to get a strong scent. When the dog’s snout is full of the rattlesnake smell, a training collar delivers a sharp pain, creating an association between the smell and pain. This method aims to ensure the dog remembers to avoid rattlesnakes permanently.
The trainer, Darel, developed this service after his own dog almost played with a rattlesnake, leading him to discover a similar training system in Arizona. He obtained his first permit from WDFW in 2011 and has been offering classes each summer since returning to Washington in 2003. The business emphasizes the effectiveness of this training, stating that dogs are not naturally afraid of rattlesnakes and that the training helps prevent bites, which affect over 150,000 dogs annually.
Accomplishments
The classes were featured in the Wenatchee World. The trainer obtained their first permit from WDFW (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife) in 2011.
