Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Balanced Training

Equipment:

  • Food Rewards
  • Flat Collars

Safari Dogs Ranch offers a “Boot Camp” training regimen, which is most effective when 3 weeks long, costing $175 per day. Puppies can enroll as early as 4 months of age, with a suggested 2-3 weeks for basic commands and manners, followed by another 2-3 weeks at 7-9 months for advanced commands. For adult dogs, 3-4 weeks of continuous stay is suggested.

Training begins with positive motivation. Once commands are understood, the program advances to off-leash expectations, incorporating consequences for poor choices and direct physical teaching. The method involves rewarding good choices and ignoring or physically teaching dogs to avoid bad choices. Commands taught include being calm in a crate, potty outside, heeling without pulling, reliable recall, “leave it,” sit & stay, lay down & stay (with distractions), “go to bed & stay,” no mouthing, no jumping, self-control, no barking, and waiting politely at doors.

Dogs in training live primarily in the house and have ample playtime with friendly dogs in well-fenced play yards. Training includes public on-leash sessions with distractions, though most training at the ranch is off-leash. Each dog works several hours daily with a trainer. In-home private lessons are also available for new and existing clients.

About the Trainer

Safari Dogs Ranch, owned by Alicia Dawn, is a dog training business located on a 15-acre private residence northeast of Denton, Texas. Alicia has extensive experience training various animals, with a particular focus on dogs. The ranch provides pet obedience training through private lessons and board & train programs.

They also offer dog boarding services in secure indoor/outdoor runs, which are climate-controlled and cleaned with non-toxic cleaners. The owner lives next door to the kennel, and additional staff assist with cleaning and playtime. Safari Dogs Ranch also hosts dog parties, providing a one-acre fenced yard for off-leash play, water, and other amenities.

A unique advantage is their holistic approach to training, diet, and health, favoring raw food diets and minimal vaccines. They cater to Retrievers, Doodles, and pack-social friendly dog breeds, offering private play yards for shy, small, and senior dogs. Chauffeur service is available for boarding clients within a specified radius.
