Dog Training Methodology

Methods:

  • Positive Reinforcement Only
  • clicker

Equipment:

  • Clickers

SADTC offers a variety of group classes designed to teach owners how to train their dogs using positive reinforcement, specifically clicker training. Classes range from foundational puppy and basic manners to advanced competitive obedience and rally, as well as fun activities like freestyle, nose games, and trick training.

Most classes are 6 weeks long, with some competitive obedience classes being 3 weeks and Nose Games being 4 weeks. Prerequisites vary by class, with some requiring prior completion of a basic or intermediate manners class, or instructor discretion. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class prepares puppies for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test, and the Intermediate Manners/CGC Prep class covers exercises for the AKC Canine Good Citizenship Test.

The club also hosts an annual AKC obedience and rally trial, typically in November. They do not accept aggressive dogs in classes but can provide referrals to professionals who specialize in working with them.

About the Trainer

The San Antonio Dog Training Club (SADTC) is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1961, dedicated to training dogs to be loving and well-behaved companions. They achieve this by teaching dog owners to train their own dogs using positive training techniques, including clicker training.

SADTC also provides training for individuals interested in competitive dog obedience and offers an annual American Kennel Club (AKC) obedience and rally trial. The club has a history of volunteering with various organizations like the Hill Country Animal League, Therapy Animals of San Antonio, and the San Antonio Humane Society, assisting with obedience and rally demos and helping shelter dogs become more adoptable. They also provided disaster relief for animal victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike.

The club emphasizes a fun training experience for both dogs and handlers, promoting bonding and mental stimulation through various classes. They offer a range of classes from puppy and basic manners to competitive obedience, rally, freestyle, nose games, and trick training.

SADTC encourages interested persons to observe a class before enrolling and offers membership benefits, including discounted or free classes for voting members. They are unable to accept aggressive dogs in their classes but can provide referrals to professionals who work with them.
