Dog Training Methodology

Equipment:

  • Obstacle Courses

Sandia Dog Obedience Club offers classes in Obedience, Agility, Rally, Conformation, Canine Freestyle, Tracking, and Scent Work. Classes are structured as 4, 6, or 8-week sessions.

Agility classes are formed from wait lists; interested individuals must mail their application and vaccination records to the Agility Registrar to be placed on a wait list, with payment due only upon class confirmation. For obedience classes, wait lists are not maintained, and applications, checks, and shot records for full classes are shredded.

All classes require a mailed application, payment, and proof of vaccination. Drop-in Drill sessions are also available for ongoing practice.

About the Trainer

Sandia Dog Obedience Club (SDOC) is an AKC member club that has been teaching people and their dogs for over 70 years. They sponsor and conduct AKC Trials in Obedience, Agility, Rally, Scent Work, and Tracking throughout the year.

The club offers a wide variety of classes including Obedience, Agility, Rally, Conformation, Canine Freestyle, Tracking, and Scent Work. They are an all-volunteer organization committed to providing quality training for both the dog and handler, welcoming all dogs, whether purebred or mixed breed.

SDOC operates from a large training facility in Albuquerque, which features a climate-controlled building custom-designed for dog training with wall-to-wall floor mats. Outdoors, there is a lighted Agility field equipped with regulation equipment and completely fenced for safety, featuring soft sandy soil ideal for agility work.

Accomplishments

Sandia Dog Obedience Club has been teaching people and their dogs for over 70 years, having held its first AKC Licensed Obedience Trial on August 31, 1952. The club is an AKC member club and regularly sponsors AKC Trials in various dog sports.

A significant accomplishment includes being “The Club That Saul Saved,” referring to Saul Rovinsky who took over in the late 1990s, turning the club’s finances around and leading to the development of their current training facility.

How to Get Started!

To apply for a class, clients should first check the “Classes” section on the main menu for upcoming classes that are not full. For most classes, a Class Application form needs to be downloaded, filled out, and mailed along with shot records and payment to the appropriate registrar.

For Agility classes, applicants must mail their application and proof of vaccinations to the Agility Registrar to be placed on a wait list, but payment should not be sent at this initial stage. Payment is due prior to the first day of class once a spot is confirmed. If a class is listed as “SIGN-UP REQUIRED,” online signup instructions should be followed. Applications must be mailed and are not accepted via email. It is advised to staple checks to applications to prevent misplacement. The club does not maintain wait lists for obedience classes; if a class is full, applications, checks, and shot records are shredded.
