Dog Training Methodology
Methods:
- ✓ Balanced Training
Equipment:
- ✓ E-Collars
Sit Means Sit Southern Maine offers several training programs. Puppy Management involves private in-home lessons for puppies up to 20 weeks, focusing on potty training, crate training, leash introduction, chewing/biting, confidence, socialization, and basic obedience.
The Day Train program is a hybrid of Board & Train and private lessons, where trainers work with the dog during the day on predetermined goals, and then transfer leadership skills to the owner at the end of the day. Dogs learn attention, basic obedience, and how to respond around distractions.
Board and Train programs involve the dog staying with trainers in a boarding setting to develop good behaviors and socialize, with a focus on transferring leadership back to the owner for continued success at home. Private Lessons are personally tailored to individual needs and goals, conducted in the client’s home or public places, with a professional trainer developing strategies based on the dog’s temperament.
All training progresses through three phases: The Teaching/Control Phase (6-12+ weeks) focuses on achieving control, teaching rules, and performing commands around distractions. The Reinforcement Phase (6-12+ weeks) gradually phases out training aids and introduces variable reinforcement to reduce dependence on the collar. The Maintenance Phase (ongoing) involves minimal use of training aids as the dog learns to ignore distractions, with trainers ready to reinforce rules as needed to prevent regression.

“Sit Means Sit’s training program has seriously been one of the best investments I have ever made. I picked my dog, Biggie, up last week and the changes in her behavior and previous aggression have been unbelievable! She’s a better listener, less territorial, and just an all around better behaved and happier dog! My dog…”

“We took our two pitbulls to Sit Means Sit for training. Sit Means Sit did a wonderful job training our dogs. Kileaux was always easily distracted and Nikita was a rambunctious puppy. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful in teaching us how to work with our dogs on continued training. It is hard to…”
– Shannon H.
“I am so pleased and impressed with Sit Means Sit in general. My Aussie puppy did a three week board-and-train since my work schedule limited my ability to go to group classes. They were very understanding and did an excellent job of explaining every aspect of their training methods, their e-collar, and were very open…”

About the Trainer
Sit Means Sit Southern Maine provides professional dog training in Windham and surrounding areas, specializing in basic obedience, off-leash control, anxiety, and aggression. They offer customized programs for any dog, regardless of age, size, breed, or personality. Their mission is to revolutionize the quality of life with happy, obedient, and confident dogs.
They utilize an attention-based dog training system developed by Founder and CEO Fred Hassen, which employs a variety of training tools, including their customized Sit Means Sit Collar (remote electronic dog training collar). This collar is described as a safe tool that provides an adjustable “tap” to gain the dog’s attention, similar to TENS units used in the medical field. The training aims to maintain a happy and relaxed attitude in dogs while achieving reliability around distractions.
They emphasize transferring leadership to the owner and offer ongoing support through three phases of training: Teaching/Control, Reinforcement, and Maintenance, to ensure long-term success and reliability even without training equipment.
