Southern Police Canine offers comprehensive K9 training programs for law enforcement handlers and trainers. Handler courses include Detection Canine Handler (2-3 weeks, 130-180 hours for narcotics or explosives), Police Patrol Canine Handler (4 weeks, 260 hours), and a combined Police Patrol and Detection Canine Handler (6-7 weeks, 400-450 hours). All handler courses require an 80% proficiency in both practical and written examinations for certification.

Trainer courses are also offered, such as the Patrol-Detection Trainer course, which covers training philosophies, canine selection, drives and instincts, obedience, motivation techniques, evidence detection, scent work, narcotics and explosives detection applications, tracking, health care, and practical and written examinations for both narcotics/explosives and patrol. They also provide annual re-certification classes at their facility, North Carolina community colleges, or on-site for out-of-state agencies.

They offer ongoing support, including annual re-certification at their facility or at North Carolina community colleges, and can provide on-site training for out-of-state agencies. All their dogs are 100% guaranteed suitable for police canine service, come with a current health certificate, and are guaranteed to be free of disease or hereditary malformation for one year. They also offer confidential narcotic and explosive detection services for businesses and industries.

Accomplishments

The trainers have over 40 years of combined active law enforcement experience. Mark Mills, President, has over 30 years of canine training expertise, established Greensboro’s first K-9 unit, and personally trained over 1,000 police canines. He has global experience training with police, military, and sport organizations. Ritchie Price, Head Trainer, has 25 years of North Carolina law enforcement experience and over 20 years specializing in canine training, having trained over 400 police canines. He is a charter member and former leader of the North Carolina Police Dog Association (NCPDA). Their trainers are certified police canine evaluators and judges.
